Best Cheap Streaming Stick for IPTV: What $40 Buys After the 2026 Price Rises

Stick List price (Sept 2026) Resolution Platform Runs third-party IPTV players?
Onn 4K Streaming Stick ~$40 4K Google TV Yes, from Google Play
Fire TV Stick 4K Select $49.99 (often ~$20) 4K Vega OS Only if in Amazon Appstore
Fire TV Stick HD (2026) $39.99 (often ~$18) 1080p Vega OS Only if in Amazon Appstore
Roku Streaming Stick $39.99 1080p Roku OS Very limited
Onn Full HD Stick $29.98 1080p Google TV Yes, but slow

Short answer: the cheapest stick that genuinely does IPTV well is Walmart's Onn 4K Streaming Stick at about $40. It runs Google TV, so any player in Google Play installs normally. The catch is that "cheap" moved this year: Roku, Amazon and Walmart all raised prices in 2026 because of memory costs, and the $20 sticks you remember are now $30 to $50 at list. The only way back to $20 is a Fire TV sale, and those sticks come with a big app restriction.

What "cheap" means after the 2026 price rises

For about five years, a decent streaming stick cost $25 to $30. That's over.

Roku raised its whole lineup in 2026, citing memory shortages: the basic Streaming Stick went from $29.99 to $39.99 and the Streaming Stick 4K from $49.99 to $79.99. Amazon followed on 24 August 2026, taking the Fire TV Stick HD to $39.99 and the 4K Select to $49.99. Walmart has nudged its Onn devices up twice; the Full HD stick that launched at $14.88 in 2023 was $29.98 by June 2026.

The reason is the same everywhere. AI data centres are buying enormous amounts of DRAM and flash, and streaming sticks use exactly those parts. Nothing inside the sticks improved. You just pay more for the same hardware.

So a realistic 2026 budget for a stick that won't frustrate you is $40, or $20 if you catch an Amazon sale and can live with Amazon's app store.

Why the Onn 4K stick is the pick

Three reasons, in order of how much they matter for IPTV.

It's a full Google TV device. That means Google Play, and Google Play has every mainstream IPTV player plus every licensed live TV app. If a legitimate provider gives you an M3U link or Xtream Codes details, you'll find a player that takes them. Nothing is blocked by the platform itself.

It's 4K for the price of 1080p. At about $40 it costs the same as Roku's 1080p stick and the Fire TV Stick HD. On a 4K TV that's a clear win.

It has enough memory. Reviewers list 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. That's the minimum we'd accept for a player loading a big programme guide. It isn't generous, and after a year of updates you'll want to clear app caches now and then.

What you give up: there's no Ethernet, and the Wi-Fi performance of any stick behind a TV is limited. Onn sticks are sold in the US only. And it's plainly a budget product, with a plasticky remote. For the money, none of that is a dealbreaker.

If you'd rather step up, the Onn 4K Pro box at $59.98 adds Ethernet and 32GB of storage. We cover that in our Android box guide.

The $20 Fire Stick: a real bargain with a condition

Amazon's Fire TV Stick 4K Select lists at $49.99, but it has repeatedly sold for about $20. That's the cheapest 4K stick you can buy from a major brand.

The condition: it runs Vega OS, Amazon's own Linux-based system. It only installs apps from the Amazon Appstore. You can't sideload anything, and there's no setting that changes that.

For a lot of people, that's no problem at all. If your live TV comes from YouTube TV, Sling, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, Philo, or the free services like Pluto TV and Tubi, all of those have Vega apps. At $20 it's the cheapest way to add live TV to a spare room.

If your provider expects you to use a particular third-party player, though, check the Appstore before you buy. If it isn't listed, the stick can't run it. There's more on Amazon's two operating systems in our Fire TV guide.

Roku: simple, but not a playlist device

Roku's menus are the easiest in the business, and the $39.99 Streaming Stick is a good choice for someone who just wants to open the YouTube TV app and watch. We'd happily set one up for a relative.

But Roku is a closed platform. There's no sideloading for normal users, and the channel store has very few serious M3U players. Most of the ones that have appeared were limited or short-lived. If IPTV to you means a playlist, a Roku stick is the wrong buy at any price. IPTV on Roku explains what does and doesn't work.

The Roku Streaming Stick 4K is now $79.99 after the price rise. At that price there's no reason to choose it over the Onn.

Skip 1080p unless the TV is 1080p

The Fire TV Stick HD, the Roku Streaming Stick and the Onn Full HD stick all output 1080p. Plug one into a 4K TV and the TV has to upscale everything. Most TVs do that reasonably, but you've bought a limit you didn't need.

The price gap has also shrunk to almost nothing. The Onn 4K stick costs about $10 more than the Onn Full HD stick. The 4K Select is $10 more than the Fire HD. That's not a saving worth having.

Bandwidth isn't really the argument either way. A 1080p stream from a licensed service typically needs 5 to 8Mbps and a 4K stream around 25Mbps, and most live channels are still broadcast in 1080p or 720p anyway. The point of buying 4K is that the stick handles 4K apps, HDR and newer codecs when you do use them, not that every channel suddenly looks sharper.

There's one exception. If the TV is an older 1080p set in a kitchen or bedroom, a 1080p stick is fine. Just don't pay more for 4K you can't see.

Where the money is better spent

A $40 stick and a $150 box will show nearly the same picture from the same stream. What makes IPTV stutter is almost never the stick. It's the Wi-Fi reaching the back of the TV, or an overloaded source.

If you've got $20 left after buying the stick, don't spend it on a fancier model. Spend it on:

  • An HDMI extender cable (usually in the box) so the stick sits a few inches away from the TV's metal back panel. It's free and helps Wi-Fi more than you'd expect.
  • A mesh node or a better router position, if the TV is two walls away from the router.
  • A month of a licensed service's trial before committing to an annual plan. How free trials work.

And avoid anything sold as a "loaded" stick. Those are ordinary sticks with unlicensed apps installed and a markup added. Amazon now blocks those apps, and you've no recourse when they stop working.

Once the stick is working, our internet speed guide shows how much bandwidth you actually need for 1080p and 4K streams.

Quick answers

What's the best cheap streaming stick for IPTV? The Onn 4K Streaming Stick at about $40. It runs Google TV and installs any IPTV player from Google Play.

What's the cheapest 4K stick in 2026? The Fire TV Stick 4K Select when it's on sale for about $20, but it only runs apps from the Amazon Appstore.

Why did streaming sticks get more expensive? Memory and storage prices rose because AI data centres are buying so much of it. Roku and Amazon both raised prices in 2026.

Can a Roku stick play an M3U playlist? Only through a few limited channel-store apps. Roku isn't a good choice for playlist-based IPTV.

Is a 1080p stick OK on a 4K TV? It works, but the TV upscales everything, and the 4K models now cost only about $10 more.

Are "loaded" Fire Sticks a good deal? No. They're normal sticks with unlicensed apps installed at a markup, and Amazon blocks those apps.
