Short answer: the best free IPTV player depends on the device, but three names cover almost everyone: OTT Navigator on Android and Fire TV, UHF's free tier on Apple devices, and Kodi on Windows and Mac. All three include a programme guide at no cost. What "free" usually costs you is recording, which almost no free player offers. And a free player is only the software: it plays nothing until you add a playlist or login from a service you already have.

The three worth knowing
OTT Navigator is the most generous free player on Android. Guide, catch-up for services that support it, external player support, and a huge settings menu, with no ads. The paid tier (around $19.99 lifetime) adds profiles and picture-in-picture, not core features. It doesn't record in any tier.
UHF on Apple devices includes the guide, catch-up and timeshift for free. The free tier carries a small watermark and limits how far ahead you can browse the guide. That's a reasonable trade.
Kodi is free in the fullest sense: open source, no ads, no premium tier. With the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on it's a complete TV app. Its price is time, since setup takes fifteen to twenty minutes. Our Kodi setup guide shortens that.
Where free players make their money
Developers need to eat. Free players pay for themselves in one of four ways, and it's worth knowing which one you're using:
- Freemium (TiviMate, UHF, Televizo): the free tier is a showroom for a paid upgrade. Fine and honest.
- Ads (MyIPTV Player, some Samsung and LG apps): tolerable, occasionally intrusive.
- Open source (Kodi, VLC, IPTVnator): volunteer-built or donation-funded. Nothing to worry about from the official source.
- Something else. Free apps from unknown publishers that ask for broad permissions, or come as APKs from random sites, may be monetising your device. Avoid.
The fourth group includes "free player" APKs that arrive with channels already loaded. They aren't players. They're unlicensed services, and they're a common source of malware. How to spot them.
When paying a few dollars is smarter
Free is right for most people. Pay when one of these applies:
- You want to record. TiviMate Premium at $11.99 a year is the cheapest route on Android. On Apple, recording needs a server like UHF Server or Channels DVR. See recording options.
- You have several TVs. One TiviMate Premium account covers up to five devices, which beats paying per TV.
- You use more than one service. Multiple playlists are often a paid feature.
What's not worth paying for: most "Pro" tiers that only change colours and layouts. And never pay a reseller for a player licence. Buy direct from the developer; here's how TiviMate licensing works.
Free player, free channels?
Many people searching for a free IPTV player really want free TV. That exists, legally, but not through a player app.
Free ad-supported services such as Pluto TV, Tubi, The Roku Channel, Samsung TV Plus, LG Channels and Plex's live TV offer hundreds of licensed channels at no cost, in their own apps. An antenna brings in your local networks in HD for free. Our cheapest way to watch live TV guide covers both.
Some free services publish official M3U feeds you can load into a player, but most don't. Playlists shared on forums or GitHub claiming to be "free IPTV" usually include channels nobody licensed; skip them. What's legal and what isn't explains the line.
