Short answer: TiviMate is the best IPTV player for Android TV and Google TV in 2026, and on these devices it installs from Google Play like any other app. If you don't need recording, OTT Navigator's free tier does almost everything else. The non-obvious catch: a player is only as fast as the box underneath it, and a big playlist on a cheap 2GB-RAM TV will feel sluggish in any app.

The recording question
Ask yourself one thing before comparing features: do you want to record live TV on this box?
If yes, the list shrinks to TiviMate Premium, TiviGlass's paid tiers, Sparkle TV Plus, or Kodi with a separate backend. Recording needs storage, too. Most Android TV boxes have 8 to 32GB, most of it already used. Plan on a USB drive or a network share. An hour of HD is typically 2 to 3GB.
If no, and catch-up from your provider covers the times you miss something, a free player is fine. Catch-up only works when your service offers it, though; the player just displays it. We explain the difference in catch-up TV explained and recording and DVR options.
TiviMate
TiviMate's advantage on Android TV is that it was designed for a remote from day one. The guide loads fast, the channel list sits on the left, and long-pressing OK gives you everything else. Nothing needs a mouse.
Premium costs $11.99 a year or $33.99 once (the lifetime price has moved between about $21 and $38 since 2021). One Premium account covers up to five devices, which suits a house with two or three TVs. You buy it through the TiviMate Companion app on a phone, not in the TV app.
Weaknesses: VOD browsing (films and series from Xtream logins) is plain compared with newer apps, and there's no iOS or Apple TV version. If your household mixes Apple and Android, that matters.
The newer players: TiviGlass and Sparkle TV
Both arrived as TiviMate alternatives with a more modern, poster-heavy look for films and series. They're actively updated, which matters on a platform where Google changes background-app rules most years.
TiviGlass is the more polished of the two, but its paid tiers cost more than TiviMate lifetime. Worth it only if you watch a lot of on-demand content from your provider and find TiviMate's VOD screens too plain.
Sparkle TV is free to install, with a Plus subscription bought through Google Play unlocking recording and extras. Paying through Play is a small advantage: refunds and cancellations go through Google, not a developer's website.
OTT Navigator
If you want free and good, this is it. EPG, catch-up for providers that support it, external player hand-off, and more layout controls than anyone needs. No recording in any tier.
Its menus are its weakness. Expect to spend a while in Settings the first time. After that it just works.
Your box matters more than you think
Load a 5,000-channel playlist with seven days of guide data and a budget smart TV with 1.5 or 2GB of RAM will stutter in every player. That's not the app.
The Google TV Streamer ($99.99 at launch) and the Nvidia Shield TV Pro handle large guides without complaint. The onn 4K Pro (around $50 at Walmart) is the best value if your budget is tight. Built-in Android TV on a Sony or TCL set varies a lot by model year. Our Android TV box guide and Google TV Streamer setup cover the specifics.
Use Ethernet if you can. Most "player" complaints about buffering are Wi-Fi.
Not worth it
- Paying for two premium players. Pick one. The differences are layout, not quality.
- "Mod" APKs with premium unlocked. Unknown code on a device signed into your Google account. No.
- Any app that comes with channels already inside. A real player is empty until you add a playlist from a service you pay for. If you're unsure whether a service is licensed, these warning signs help.
