Short answer: the cheapest way to get the actual ESPN channel without cable is ESPN Unlimited on an annual plan: $319.99 a year, which works out to about $26.67 a month (prices from September 17, 2026). The trap is ESPN Select. At $13.99 it looks like the bargain, but it's the old ESPN+ tier and does not include ESPN, ESPN2 or Monday Night Football. Plenty of people buy it by mistake every September.
At a glance
ESPN without cable, fall 2026
| Cheapest real ESPN | ESPN Unlimited annual, $319.99 |
| Cheapest monthly | ESPN Unlimited, $31.99 |
| Also want Fox | ESPN + Fox One bundle, $39.99 |
| Not ESPN the channel | ESPN Select, $13.99 |
| Free for big games | ABC with an antenna |
Every legal way to get ESPN, cheapest first
"Cheapest" depends on how many months you need it. Here's the real monthly cost of each route that includes the linear ESPN channel.
| Route | Price | Effective per month | What else you get |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESPN Unlimited, annual | $319.99/yr | $26.67 | ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC, ACC, NFL Network |
| ESPN Unlimited, monthly | $31.99/mo | $31.99 | Same |
| ESPN Unlimited + Fox One | $39.99/mo | $39.99 | Fox, FS1, Big Ten Network |
| ESPN Unlimited + NFL+ Premium | $41.99/mo | $41.99 | NFL+ replays, RedZone-style features |
| Sling Orange | $45.99/mo | about $36 with first-months promo | TNT, TBS, AMC, CNN; one stream |
| DirecTV MySports | $49.99/mo | $49.99 | ESPN Unlimited login, FS1, more sports |
| YouTube TV Sports Plan | $64.99/mo | $64.99 | All four locals, FS1, unlimited DVR |
Prices as published in September 2026. Sling's discount was "$10 off per month for six months" at the time of writing and changes often.
If ESPN is the only paid channel you want, go direct. Sling Orange only wins if you also want TNT and TBS, which matter for NHL, college basketball and a lot of MLB playoff games. It's a single stream, though, so one TV at a time.
Select vs Unlimited: the mistake to avoid
ESPN runs two tiers, and the naming doesn't help.
ESPN Select ($13.99, or $139.99 a year) is what ESPN+ used to be. It has thousands of streaming-only events: some college football and basketball, NHL games, LaLiga, UFC Fight Nights, tennis and more. It does not carry the ESPN channel itself.
ESPN Unlimited ($31.99) is everything in Select plus the actual networks: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews, SEC Network, ACC Network, ESPN Deportes, ESPN on ABC events and, since 2026, NFL Network.
So if you're after Monday Night Football, the College Football Playoff, NBA on ESPN or SportsCenter, Select won't do it. If you only want a few NHL games or LaLiga, Select is the better buy by $18 a month.
Which sports need which tier
Start from the sport, not the product. This is the quickest way to know whether $13.99 or $31.99 is the right number for you.
| You want | ESPN Select enough? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Monday Night Football | No | Unlimited, or ABC simulcasts free with an antenna |
| SEC or ACC football | Mostly no | SEC Network and ACC Network are Unlimited only |
| College Football Playoff | No | ESPN and ABC |
| NBA on ESPN | No | Wednesday doubleheaders, Finals on ABC |
| NHL out-of-market games | Yes | Streaming-only games are in Select |
| LaLiga, Bundesliga | Yes | Streaming-only |
| UFC Fight Nights | Check | UFC moved major events to Paramount+ in 2026 |
| SportsCenter, studio shows | No | Linear ESPN |
Rights inside the ESPN app get reshuffled every season, so check the schedule for the specific games you want before paying.
Annual vs monthly vs seasonal
The annual plan saves about $64 against twelve monthly payments. But it only makes sense if you'd actually keep ESPN all year.
Most people don't. ESPN's heaviest months are September through January for football, then late spring for the NBA playoffs. A fan who only cares about football can subscribe monthly from September to January, five months, for about $160. That's half the annual price.
Our rule of thumb: if you'd keep it more than ten months, buy annual. Otherwise go monthly and cancel in the off-season. Set a reminder; the whole business model relies on people forgetting.
Here's how that plays out across a year for three common patterns:
- Football only, September to January: 5 months monthly = about $160. Annual = $319.99. Monthly wins by $160.
- Football plus NBA through the Finals in June: 10 months monthly = about $320. Annual = $319.99. A tie, so take annual for the convenience.
- All year, including college baseball and summer events: 12 months monthly = about $384. Annual saves $64.
One more wrinkle. ESPN has raised prices in each of the last several Septembers, and the annual plan locks your rate for twelve months. If a mid-season increase is announced, an annual subscriber rides it out. That's worth a little, but not enough to justify paying for months you won't watch.
When a bundle beats buying direct
A bundle is only cheaper if you'd pay for the other half anyway.
ESPN + Fox One at $39.99 is the best-value combination for football fans. Fox One alone is $19.99, so you save about $12 a month, and you get Fox's NFL, Big Ten and MLB coverage along with ESPN's. Between them you're covering most national NFL games outside of NBC and Prime.
Disney+, Hulu and ESPN bundles are worth it if your household already has Disney+. The $21.99 bundle includes only ESPN Select, though, so check which tier you're buying.
Live TV services like YouTube TV include ESPN Unlimited access as part of the package. That's overkill if ESPN is all you want, but if you'd otherwise pay for locals and a second sports channel, the Sports Plan at $64.99 covers the lot. More on building a sports setup in streaming for sports fans.
Don't forget ABC
ESPN puts a lot of its biggest events on ABC: Saturday night college football, several Monday Night Football simulcasts, the NBA Finals. ABC is a free broadcast channel.
A $30 indoor antenna picks it up in most metro areas, in better picture quality than the stream. If you're mostly after the big games, an antenna alone might be enough, and it costs nothing after the first day. Check coverage at your address with the antenna guide.
Who should buy what
One football fan, nothing else. ESPN Unlimited monthly from early September to the end of January, plus an antenna for CBS, Fox, NBC and ABC. Around $160 for the season.
A college football household in SEC or ACC country. Unlimited, because the conference networks are the whole point. Annual if basketball keeps you watching into March.
Family that wants locals and ESPN in one guide. YouTube TV's Sports Plan at $64.99 is simpler than juggling apps, and three people can watch at once.
Soccer and hockey, no NFL. ESPN Select at $13.99. Don't pay for Unlimited.
Casual viewer who wants the Finals and a few big games. An antenna for ABC. Pay nothing.
Where it plays
The ESPN app runs on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Samsung and LG smart TVs, Xbox, PlayStation, and phones. Your ESPN login also works inside the Disney+ app. If your TV is old or its app is sluggish, a $30 to $50 stick is the cheap fix. Which device we'd pick.
One thing to skip: sites or "IPTV" packages offering ESPN for a few dollars. They aren't licensed, and they're the first things to break during the games you bought them for. Signs to watch for.
