Is ESPN Unlimited Worth It at $31.99? The Per-Game Maths for 2026

Short answer: at $31.99 a month, ESPN Unlimited is worth it for a cord-cutter who watches ESPN several times a week during football and basketball season and has no other TV bundle. For almost everyone else it isn't, and the reason is usually that they already have it. Anyone paying for YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling Orange, Fubo, DirecTV or cable with ESPN can generally sign in to the ESPN app with that provider and get Unlimited's content at no extra cost. The other catch: buying it on its own is often worse value than buying it in a bundle.

The per-game maths

The easiest way to judge any sports subscription is to divide the price by the number of games you'll actually watch. Here's ESPN Unlimited across a typical fall, at the new $31.99 monthly price.

Viewer Games per month Cost per game Verdict
Monday Night Football only 4 to 5 $6.40 to $8 Borderline; day passes may be cheaper
MNF plus Saturday college football 10 to 12 around $3 Worth it
SEC or ACC fan, all conference games 8 to 12 around $3 Worth it
NBA fan in winter (ESPN and ABC games) 8 to 10 $3 to $4 Worth it
Occasional viewer, big games only 1 to 2 $16 to $32 Not worth it

Anything under about $4 a game is good value for live sport in 2026. Above $8, you'd do better with a short-term pass: Sling has sold day passes around $4.99 that include ESPN.

Then ask how many months you'll watch. Most people's ESPN habit is seasonal. Five months of football at $31.99 is $160. The annual plan is $319.99. Pay monthly, cancel in February, and come back in August, unless you also follow the NBA through June.

ESPN Unlimited against the alternatives

ESPN Unlimited's real competition isn't other sports apps. It's live TV services that include ESPN plus everything else.

Option Monthly (Sept 2026) ESPN channels Also includes
ESPN Unlimited $31.99 All ESPN Select content, NFL Network listed
Sling Orange $45.99 ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN3 TNT, TBS, CNN, AMC, 1 stream
YouTube TV Sports plan $64.99 ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNews Locals, NFL Network, league networks
Hulu + Live TV about $99.99 All Locals, 95+ channels, Disney+, Hulu
Disney+, Hulu, ESPN Unlimited bundle from about $35.99 at launch All Disney+ and Hulu libraries

Unlimited is the cheapest way to get the whole ESPN family, including SEC Network and ACC Network, which Sling Orange doesn't give you. If those conferences matter, Sling isn't a real alternative.

But notice the gap between Unlimited and YouTube TV's Sports plan is about $33. For that, YouTube TV adds CBS, NBC, ABC, Fox, NFL Network, a DVR and regional sports networks in some areas. If you'd otherwise buy ESPN plus an antenna plus Fox One plus Peacock, the bundle starts looking reasonable. We compare those combinations in our guide to legal sports streaming.

Why the bundles usually win

Disney prices its bundles to make standalone ESPN Unlimited look expensive, and it works. At launch, the Disney+, Hulu and ESPN Unlimited bundle cost only a few dollars more than Unlimited alone. Bundle prices may have moved with ESPN's September 2026 increase, so check the current number. If anyone in your house would watch Disney+ or Hulu, the bundle is the obvious buy.

The Fox One plus ESPN Unlimited bundle ($39.99 at launch) is the other one worth knowing. It adds your local Fox station, FS1, Big Ten Network and Fox News for about $8 more than Unlimited alone. For college football fans especially, ESPN and Fox together cover the bulk of the big Saturday games. If you're weighing that, our Fox One verdict covers the Fox side.

Standalone ESPN Unlimited is really only the best buy if you have no interest in Disney+, Hulu or Fox's channels.

What's genuinely good about it

  • It's the full ESPN lineup without cable. Before August 2025, you couldn't get ESPN's main channel without a TV bundle. Now you can.
  • SEC Network and ACC Network are included. Those are hard to get cheaply anywhere else.
  • ESPN Select content comes with it. The old ESPN+ library, 30 for 30 and thousands of streaming-only events.
  • Month to month. No contract, easy to pause for the off-season.
  • Widely supported. The ESPN app runs on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, smart TVs, PlayStation and Xbox.

What's not

  • It just got more expensive. $29.99 became $31.99 for new subscribers from August 20, 2026, with existing subscribers moving at their first bill after September 17.
  • No true DVR. You rely on replays and on-demand versions of events rather than recording anything you like.
  • It's only ESPN. No CBS, NBC or Fox games, no TNT, no regional sports networks.
  • Blackouts can apply to some games in your local market.
  • 4K is limited. Most events are produced in 1080p, sometimes with HDR.
  • The naming confuses people. ESPN Select, the cheaper $13.99 tier, doesn't include the ESPN channel at all. Plenty of people buy the wrong one. Our Select vs Unlimited explainer sets out the difference.

What changed in the first year

ESPN Unlimited launched on August 21, 2025 at $29.99 a month. A year on, the service looks a bit different, and mostly in ways that make it more useful rather than less.

NFL Network was added. ESPN's own plan descriptions now list NFL Network among the included channels, following ESPN's deal with the NFL. For football fans that fills a real gap, since NFL Network carries exclusive games and plenty of studio coverage.

More bundles appeared. The Fox One pairing arrived in October 2025, and live TV services such as DirecTV began including Unlimited app access in their packages. That's good news if you already pay for one of them, and it's the main reason so many people don't need to buy Unlimited at all.

The price went up. The $2 increase announced for August 2026 is modest, but it pushed standalone Unlimited past $30, which makes the bundles look even better by comparison.

ESPN+ disappeared as a name. It's now ESPN Select. If you had ESPN+, you were moved across automatically, and the content is broadly the same.

None of this changes the core verdict. It does mean an article written about ESPN's app in 2025 may be describing a slightly different product, so check dates on anything you read.

Decide in four questions

  1. Does any TV service you pay for carry ESPN? Yes: sign in with it, don't buy Unlimited. No: next question.
  2. Will you watch more than about eight ESPN events a month in season? No: use day passes or skip it. Yes: next question.
  3. Would anyone in the house use Disney+ or Hulu, or want Fox's sports channels? Yes: buy the relevant bundle instead. No: next question.
  4. Do you watch year-round? Yes: the $319.99 annual plan saves about two months. No: pay $31.99 monthly and cancel in the off-season.

If you've landed on standalone Unlimited, pair it with a free antenna for the network games on CBS, NBC, ABC and Fox. Together that covers a lot of the NFL and college football schedule for about $32 a month. Our antenna guide explains how to check your reception first.

One last point. ESPN's channels are sold by ESPN, Disney and licensed TV providers. Discount "ESPN logins" from marketplaces or social media are shared accounts that get shut off, usually right before a big game.
