Fire TV Stick 4K Select Review for IPTV: Why It's the Wrong Stick

Short answer: don't buy the Fire TV Stick 4K Select for IPTV. It's a fine cheap 4K stick for Netflix, Prime Video and YouTube, but it runs Amazon's Vega OS instead of Android, so it only installs apps from the Amazon Appstore, and most well-known third-party IPTV players aren't there. It also has just 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. If you want a Fire stick for IPTV, the 4K Max is the one. If you only use licensed apps that are in Amazon's store, the Select is acceptable on sale, not at its $49.99 list.

Who the 4K Select is actually for

Someone who watches Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube and Max on an older TV and wants 4K for as little as possible. For that person it's a reasonable stick, especially at the $21.99 to $29.99 sale prices Amazon has run.

It isn't for anyone who wants to pick their own player app. And that's most people who search "IPTV".

The difficulty is that it looks and sounds like the 4K Max. Same shape, similar name, similar remote. Buyers pick the cheaper one expecting the same capabilities, then find their player isn't available. This review is mostly here to stop that from happening.

Specs, and the two numbers that matter

Fire TV Stick 4K Select Fire TV Stick 4K Max
Launched October 2025 at $39.99 October 2023
US list (Sept 2026) $49.99 $84.99
OS Vega OS Fire OS (Android-based)
Chip MediaTek MT8698, 1.7 GHz quad-core 2.0 GHz quad-core
RAM 1GB 2GB
Storage 8GB 16GB
Wi-Fi Wi-Fi 5 Wi-Fi 6E
HDR HDR10+, HDR10, HLG (no Dolby Vision) Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HDR10, HLG
Sideloading No Yes

The two numbers that matter for live TV are 1GB and 8GB. A big channel guide lives in memory and on storage. On an Android device those limits would already be tight. On the Select they're mostly moot, because you can't install the apps that would use them.

Vega OS in plain English

Amazon has built Fire TV on Android since 2014. In October 2025 it launched Vega OS, its own Linux-based system, on the 4K Select. It has since said every future Fire TV Stick will use it. The 2026 Fire TV Stick HD runs it too.

Apps for Vega OS are built with web technologies (React Native) rather than Android code. Existing Android apps don't run on it. Developers have to rebuild them, and only apps in the Amazon Appstore can be installed. AFTVnews found that sideloading technically exists for developers, but it needs a developer account, a registered device, a USB connection to a computer and Amazon's tools, and test apps eventually stopped launching. It isn't a practical route for anyone.

Amazon's reasons are its own: tighter control, better performance on cheap hardware, and a harder target for piracy apps. The effect on you is simple. What's in Amazon's store is what you get.

What that means for IPTV

Licensed services: Amazon listed Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, YouTube and HBO Max at launch, and more services have been rebuilding their apps since. Before buying for a specific live TV service, search for it in the Appstore on Amazon's website and check the listing says it's compatible with the 4K Select. Don't assume.

Third-party IPTV players: this is the problem. TiviMate, Kodi and the familiar Android players can't be installed, because they're Android apps. A few basic players may appear in Amazon's store over time, but the mature ones with full EPG, catch-up and recording aren't there as of September 2026. If you have an M3U playlist or Xtream login from a legitimate provider, the Select is the wrong device. Our IPTV player roundup lists which platforms each player supports.

"Loaded" sticks: sellers still advertise Fire sticks preloaded with channel apps. On Vega OS that's even less likely to work, and Amazon blocks apps giving access to unlicensed content on all Fire TV devices. Avoid them. IPTV scam signs.

How to tell which stick you have

  • Check the box. "4K Select" is Vega OS. "4K Max" and "4K Plus" are Fire OS.
  • Check the software version. Go to Settings, then My Fire TV, then About. A software version starting with "1" is Vega OS. Fire OS versions start with 5, 6, 7 or 8 (and 14 on some newer TVs).
  • Check the HD stick's shape. The 2026 Fire TV Stick HD with rounded corners and Wi-Fi 6 is Vega OS. The 2024 HD stick with squared corners is Fire OS.

If you've just bought a Select by mistake, Amazon's standard 30-day return window applies to most purchases. Swap it for the right model. Our IPTV on Fire TV guide covers setup on the Fire OS sticks.

Better choices at a similar price

Device US price (Sept 2026) Why it's better for IPTV
onn 4K Pro (2026) About $60 Google TV, Play Store, Ethernet, 3GB/32GB
Fire TV Stick 4K Max $84.99 list, often discounted Fire OS, sideloading, Wi-Fi 6E, Dolby Vision
Fire TV Stick 4K Plus $69.99 list Fire OS, sideloading allowed
Roku Streaming Stick 4K $79.99 list Not for playlists, but simpler for licensed apps

The onn 4K Pro is our pick for most people. It costs about $10 more than the Select's list price and is a different class of device. We explain why in onn 4K Pro vs Fire TV Stick 4K Max. For a broader view, see the best streaming devices for IPTV.
