Short answer: for a household buying its own box, a Formuler beats a MAG. Formuler's Android boxes run MYTVOnline, which plays MAG-style portals as well as Xtream logins and M3U playlists, and they also run ordinary Android apps. A MAG box is a locked Linux set-top box built for operators: an ISP, a hotel chain or a campus system that configures it for you. If your operator hands you a MAG, use it. If nobody does, there's little reason to buy one in 2026.
At a glance
Formuler vs MAG
| Formuler | Android, MYTVOnline, apps, about $150 to $300 |
| MAG (Infomir) | Linux, portal only, about $100 |
| Plays portals | Both |
| Plays M3U / Xtream | Formuler fully; MAG limited |
| Buy a MAG only if | Your operator specifies it |
They're built for different buyers
Infomir, the Ukrainian company behind MAG, sells mainly to operators. An internet provider or hotel buys MAG boxes in bulk, points them at its own middleware (Infomir's Ministra platform, often called a "Stalker portal"), brands the menus and ships them to customers. The box is meant to do one thing, the operator's TV service, and do it reliably for years. There's no app store to speak of.
Formuler, a Korean brand sold in North America through its own stores, builds boxes for end users. They run Android, and the headline feature is MYTVOnline, Formuler's own live TV app with a grid guide, recording, catch-up and multi-source support. You can also install other Android apps. MYTVOnline started out imitating the MAG experience, which is why the two brands get compared.
So the comparison is less "which box is better" and more "are you the operator's customer, or your own system administrator?"

Infomir also lists the MAG540w3 at around $97. Formuler's cheaper Z11 Pro (2GB RAM, 16GB) sits below the Pro Max. Formuler notes that its boxes support Widevine L1 but that doesn't guarantee a given streaming service has certified them for HD playback. If Netflix in 4K matters, check before you buy.
Portals, playlists and logins
There are three common ways a provider delivers a channel list. Here's how each box copes.
Portal (MAC-address based). The provider registers your box's MAC address on its server and gives you a portal URL. This is native territory for MAG. Formuler's MYTVOnline also supports Stalker/MAG-style portals, and each Formuler has its own MAC address you register the same way.
Xtream Codes login. Server, username, password. MYTVOnline handles it directly. MAG boxes are portal-first and don't handle it natively in the same way. How Xtream logins work.
M3U playlist. A single URL. MYTVOnline and any Android player handle it. MAG firmware can play basic playlists, but the experience is primitive by comparison. M3U explained.
MYTVOnline 3 also lets you load several sources at once and search across all of them, which matters if you combine, say, a licensed international package with a home HDHomeRun feed.
A word on where portals come from
Here's the uncomfortable part. Outside of ISPs, hotels and a small number of licensed ethnic TV packages, many "MAG portal" services sold to consumers online are unlicensed resellers. They ask for your MAC address, take payment by crypto or messaging app, and carry premium channels at prices no licensed service could match.
That's not a reason to avoid the hardware. It's a reason to be careful who configures it. A licensed operator will be a named company with published terms and a normal checkout. Our scam signs checklist and how to find a provider go through the checks. Neither Formuler nor Infomir supplies channels; both are hardware-only.
Where the MAG still wins
It's easy to dismiss the MAG as underpowered. 1GB of RAM looks absurd next to a $60 Google TV box. But for its intended job, it has real strengths:
- Simplicity. It boots straight into the TV service. There's nothing else to break, no app updates, no home-screen ads.
- Operator support. If your ISP issued it, they support it. You call one number.
- Price. At about $100, it's half the cost of a Z11 Pro Max.
- Stability. A Linux box running one app tends to run it for years without drama.
For an elderly relative on an ISP's TV service, a MAG can genuinely be the better device. For anyone who wants to add apps, switch providers or use Xtream and M3U sources, it's a dead end.
Which to buy
Your operator provides or specifies a MAG: use the MAG. Don't swap in a Formuler unless the operator confirms support.
You want MAG-style live TV plus apps: Formuler Z11 Pro Max. MYTVOnline is the reason to own one, and it sits alongside the players in our IPTV player roundup.
You mainly use an Xtream login or M3U with a mainstream player: you may not need either. A $60 Google TV box running TiviMate does most of what MYTVOnline does. See best streaming device for IPTV.
Avoid: used MAG boxes sold "with portal". The portal is the part that's usually unlicensed, and the MAC address may already be tied to someone else's account.
