Short answer: for most sports fans, DirecTV's Choice tier is the more complete package because it carries TNT and TBS, the full ESPN family with ESPN Unlimited app access, and the widest set of regional sports networks of any streaming bundle. Fubo is the better pick if you follow international soccer or want the most 4K, and its Sports + News plan is the cheapest way into a real sports lineup. The catch: both advertise prices that exclude a regional sports fee, and on Fubo Pro that fee can add up to about $17 a month depending on your ZIP code.
At a glance
Fubo vs DirecTV for sports
| Best overall for US sports | DirecTV Choice |
| Best for soccer and 4K | Fubo Pro or Elite |
| Cheapest real sports tier | Fubo Sports + News, ~$64.99 |
| TNT and TBS | DirecTV yes; Fubo has historically lacked them |
| Both add | A ZIP-based regional sports fee |
Start with your sports, not the service
Sports rights in the US are split across so many networks that "which service is best for sports" has no single answer. It depends on which three or four things you actually watch. So before comparing, write down the leagues and teams that matter to you.
Then ask three questions. Do you need TNT and TBS (NHL, MLB, March Madness, NASCAR and some college football; the NBA left TNT after the 2024-25 season)? Do you follow a local NBA, NHL or MLB team on a regional sports network? And do you watch soccer from outside the US on channels like beIN Sports?
Those three answers decide this comparison far more than channel counts. Fubo advertises 200+ channels and DirecTV up to 185+, but most of those are filler for a sports fan.
Price table, September 2026
Fubo's list prices below come from a price tracker verified in September 2026; retailer sites often show them with a first-month discount already applied, which is why you'll see lower figures elsewhere. DirecTV's standard rates are harder to pin down, since its own site leads with promotions, so we show both.
| Plan | Monthly price | Regional sports fee | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fubo Sports + News | $64.99 | May apply | Skinny sports and news bundle, launched Sept 2025 |
| Fubo Pro | $88.99 | $3.99 to $16.99 | Full lineup, unlimited DVR |
| Fubo Elite | $98.99 | Some sources say included | Adds more channels and 4K Plus |
| DirecTV Entertainment | $59.99 promo / ~$86.99 | None (no RSNs) | ESPN, TNT, TBS, no RSNs |
| DirecTV Choice | $64.99 promo / ~$114.99 | Up to $19.99 | Adds RSNs, NFL Network, more sports |
| DirecTV Ultimate | $89.99 promo / ~$129.99 | Up to $19.99 | Adds NBA TV, NHL Network, more |
Realistically, Fubo Pro lands around $95 to $105 with the fee and taxes. DirecTV Choice lands around $80 to $90 while the promo lasts, then $125 to $135. Ask DirecTV exactly how long your promo runs before you sign up.
DirecTV also sells a MySports Genre Pack, a smaller sports-focused package that has been advertised at under $50 for the first month ahead of football season. It's worth a look if you want ESPN and the national sports networks without paying for a hundred entertainment channels, but check exactly which regional networks it includes in your area before assuming it replaces Choice.
League by league
NFL: a tie on the basics. Both carry CBS, Fox, NBC (in most markets), ESPN and NFL Network, which covers local Sunday games plus Monday and Thursday night. Neither offers NFL Sunday Ticket; that's only on YouTube and YouTube TV. For how the whole NFL season splits across services, see where to watch the NFL in 2026.
NBA: DirecTV edges it. National games are now spread across ESPN, ABC, NBC and Amazon, and your local team is usually on an RSN, which DirecTV carries more widely. Fubo had a carriage dispute with NBCUniversal that affected channel availability; reports say it was resolved, but it's a reminder that lineups can change mid-season.
NHL and MLB: mostly an RSN question. If your team's network is on DirecTV and not Fubo, the decision is made. TNT carries some NHL games, which favors DirecTV.
College football and basketball: both carry ESPN, ESPN2, SEC Network, ACC Network (check tier) and Fox Sports. DirecTV's TNT/TBS matters in March.
Soccer: Fubo is the clear pick. It's long been the home of beIN Sports, with Fox's soccer coverage and a lot of international matches in 4K. If you follow La Liga, Ligue 1 or South American qualifiers, Fubo is the natural fit.
Golf, tennis, motorsport: roughly even. Golf Channel availability and ESPN's tennis rights are on both in their main tiers.
Regional sports networks and the fee
Regional sports networks are the reason sports bundles cost what they do. They're expensive, and both services pass that cost to you as a separate line item.
On Fubo, the fee ranges from $3.99 to $16.99 a month, depending on which RSNs are in your area. On DirecTV Choice and above, it can reach $19.99. In both cases, you pay the fee whether or not you watch the team.
Two things to check before paying. First, which RSN covers your team this season. Several teams have left traditional RSNs for their own apps or free local stations, which means the fee might be buying you nothing. Second, whether DirecTV or Fubo actually carries that specific RSN. Enter your ZIP code on both sites' channel lookup pages; don't trust a national lineup.
If you don't follow a local pro team, pick a tier without RSNs (DirecTV Entertainment or Fubo Sports + News) and save the money.
4K, screens and DVR
Fubo leads on 4K. It streams many big events in 4K, including a lot of soccer and some college football, and Elite bundles 4K Plus. DirecTV offers some 4K too but less of it. Keep expectations modest: live 4K on both depends on the broadcaster producing it, and much of what's labeled 4K is upscaled from 1080p HDR.
Screens favor Fubo slightly. Reports put Pro and Elite at up to ten home streams plus two on mobile. DirecTV is also generous at home. Both allow fewer streams away from home.
DVR is a wash. Both offer unlimited cloud DVR with long retention.
Whichever you pick, a fast, stable connection matters more than the service for live sport. A wired Ethernet connection to the main TV is the single biggest fix for stuttering during big games. Our buffering guide covers the rest.
Mistakes that cost sports fans money
Paying the RSN fee for a team you don't watch. It's the most common overspend in live TV.
Staying subscribed in the off-season. Both services are month to month. If you only care about football, cancel in February and come back in August. That alone can save $300 to $500 a year.
Buying the top tier for one channel. If Ultimate or Elite is only for NBA TV or NHL Network, check whether that league's own streaming service is cheaper.
Anything promising "every game, every league" for $15. Nobody licenses all US sports for that. Services built on that pitch are unlicensed and tend to vanish mid-season. We explain the warning signs in our scam guide.
Our pick for each kind of fan
The local-team fan (NBA, NHL, MLB): DirecTV Choice, if it carries your RSN. It has the widest RSN coverage among the big bundles.
The soccer fan: Fubo Pro. beIN and the 4K coverage make it the obvious choice.
The NFL-and-college fan who doesn't care about RSNs: Fubo Sports + News or DirecTV Entertainment on promo. Or look past both: YouTube TV is the only route to Sunday Ticket.
The March Madness and NHL playoffs fan: DirecTV, for TNT and TBS.
The casual fan who watches a few big games: neither. A single sports app or a free antenna for the network games will cost far less.
