Short answer: installation depends on your device, and takes about ten minutes on any of them. On Fire TV, enable developer options, install Downloader, and fetch the player's APK from the developer's own site. On Android TV, install from the Play Store. On Samsung and LG, install from the TV's app store and upload your playlist to the app's MAC address through a browser. On Apple TV, install a player from the App Store. On Roku, you can't install outside the Channel Store — use a store player, cast, or run a home server. In every case you need your provider's details first: an M3U URL, Xtream Codes credentials, or a portal address.
At a glance
Installing by device
| Fire TV | Downloader, then sideload the APK |
| Android TV | Play Store, straight install |
| Samsung / LG | TV store, upload playlist via browser |
| Apple TV | App Store player |
| Roku | Channel Store only — no sideloading |
Before you start
Two things to have ready.
Your provider's details. These come in one of three forms, and they aren't interchangeable: an M3U playlist URL, Xtream Codes credentials (server address, username, password), or a portal address with a MAC. Check which you have before choosing a player, because not every app accepts all three.
A wired connection if possible. Ethernet is the single biggest improvement you can make to live TV, especially during sport.
And one shortcut worth knowing: if your service has its own app, none of the rest applies. Install it from your device's store, sign in, done. Players are only for playlist-based services. The three decisions before you install anything.
Fire TV and Firestick
Fire TV runs a fork of Android, so it takes almost any Android player — but Amazon's store carries few of them, so you install a helper app first.
- Enable developer options. Settings → My Fire TV → About, then click the Fire TV Stick entry seven times until it confirms.
- Install Downloader from Amazon's own Appstore. It's free.
- Allow it to install apps. Settings → My Fire TV → Developer options → Install unknown apps, then switch Downloader on. It's a per-app permission, not a global setting.
- Open Downloader and enter the developer's official download address for your player.
- Install, then delete the APK. Downloader offers this — worth doing on a device with under 6GB free.
The one rule: take APKs from the developer's own site. Repackaged files on aggregator sites are a known malware route, and this device sits permanently on your home network.
Android TV and boxes
The simplest case. Open the Play Store, search for your player, install it. TiviMate, Kodi and most others are listed.
If a player isn't in the Play Store, you can sideload as on Fire TV — but note that Google's developer verification requirement began rolling out in September 2026, so apps from unregistered developers may be blocked on certified Android devices. If your player is in the store, this doesn't affect you.
Samsung and LG TVs
These TVs run their own operating systems, so Android players don't exist for them. The usual choice is Smart IPTV or a similar playlist app from the TV's own store.
- Install the app from the Samsung or LG store on the TV.
- Open it and note the MAC address shown on the first screen — twelve characters.
- On a phone or computer, go to the developer's portal shown in the app, enter that MAC and upload your M3U playlist.
- Reload the app on the TV. Channels should appear within a minute.
- Activate before the trial ends or the uploaded playlists are deleted.
Typing the MAC correctly is where most failures happen — 0 and O, 8 and B. One activation per TV, and why.
If the app isn't listed for your model or region, use another playlist app from the TV store, or add a cheap streaming stick.
Apple TV and iPhone
Install a player from the App Store — there's no sideloading on tvOS, so the store is the only route. Several good players exist.
Watch the in-app purchases: the app may be free or cheap while the programme guide, extra playlists or recording cost more. Check what's included before assuming the advertised price is the total.
Roku
Roku doesn't allow installing apps from outside its Channel Store, and the old "private channel codes" method was retired in 2022. Your options:
A Channel Store player that accepts M3U playlists — fewer choices and more basic than elsewhere.
Casting from a phone or laptop, which works but ties up the device.
A home server such as Jellyfin or Plex on a computer, which converts your playlist into something Roku's official apps can play.
If you're buying a device specifically for a playlist service, Roku is the wrong choice. Which device to buy.
Computer
Install VLC — free, from videolan.org. Media → Open Network Stream, paste your M3U URL, play. View → Playlist shows the channel list.
It's also the best diagnostic tool you have: if a stream plays in VLC but not in your TV player, the problem is the player's configuration, not the stream.
After installing
- Enter your details exactly. M3U in the playlist field, Xtream credentials in their three separate fields. Mixing them up, or dropping the port number, is the usual cause of "playlist not found".
- Let the list load fully before touching anything. Large playlists take a while the first time.
- Add the EPG if your provider supplies a separate guide URL.
- Build favourites and hide the rest. On a list of hundreds, this is what makes it usable — and how you keep unwanted channels away from children.
- Test at a busy time, not a quiet afternoon, while you're still inside any trial.
- Back up your configuration if the player supports it.
Frequently asked questions
How do I install IPTV on a Firestick? Enable developer options, install Downloader from the Appstore, allow it to install apps, then fetch the player's APK from the developer's site.
Do I need to sideload anything? Only on Fire TV, and only if your player isn't in the Appstore. Android TV, Samsung, LG and Apple TV all install from their own stores.
Can I install IPTV on a Roku? Only from the Channel Store. Roku doesn't allow sideloading.
Why won't my playlist load? Usually an M3U URL entered into Xtream Codes fields, a missing port number, or a mistyped MAC address.
Is sideloading legal? Yes. Installing software outside an app store is a normal Android capability. What you stream is a separate question.
How long does installation take? About ten minutes on any device, once you have your provider's details.
Menu paths vary between device models and software versions. If a setting isn't where described, check the current layout in your device's settings.
