Short answer: LG smart TVs run webOS, and IPTV on them comes through the LG Content Store: live TV services' own apps, the free LG Channels service, and a small set of playlist players for an M3U or Xtream login you already have. What you can install depends heavily on your TV's webOS version, not just its age. The useful surprise is that many LG sets from 2022 onward are eligible for LG's webOS Re:New upgrades, so a TV that seems to lack an app today may gain it after a system update.

Find your webOS version first
Almost every "why can't I find this app on my LG" question comes down to webOS version. Two TVs bought the same year can be on different versions depending on updates, and app developers set minimum versions.
Open Settings > General > About This TV (on some models, Settings > Support > TV Information). Note the webOS TV version and check for a software update while you're there.
Since 2023 LG has marketed newer versions by year, such as webOS 23, 24 and 25, instead of plain numbers. Older sets show versions like webOS 4.x, 5.x or 6.x.
What each generation of LG TV can do
A rough map, based on LG's published update policy and app listings. Individual apps set their own minimums, so treat this as a guide rather than a guarantee.
| TV era | Typical webOS | Live TV apps | Outlook |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2022 and newer | webOS 22 onward | Broad support | Many models eligible for Re:New upgrades |
| 2020 to 2021 | webOS 5 to 6 | Most major apps | Updates slowing; check each app |
| 2018 to 2019 | webOS 4.x | Patchy | Consider an add-on streaming device |
| Before 2018 | webOS 3.x or older | Limited | An add-on device is the practical fix |
webOS Re:New is LG's programme, announced in 2023, to deliver major webOS upgrades to eligible TVs for several years after purchase. Eligibility varies by model and region; check LG's support page for your model number. If you own an eligible set, installing updates is the cheapest way to gain app support.
LG Channels and the antenna
LG Channels is the free, ad-supported live TV service built into LG TVs, with a few hundred channels in the US spanning news, films, classic TV and lifestyle. It integrates with the TV's main guide, so the free streams sit alongside broadcast channels.
That broadcast part matters: LG TVs have a built-in tuner, and newer US models support ATSC 3.0 (NextGen TV) in many cases. Connect an antenna and your local networks appear free, sometimes in better quality than any stream. Our antenna guide explains placement and range.
Between the two, many households find their "must-have" list shrinks to a handful of cable networks and sport.
Live TV service apps
On current LG TVs you'll generally find YouTube TV, Sling, Fubo, Philo and Hulu (for Hulu + Live TV) in the Content Store. DirecTV Stream support has been less consistent across smart TV platforms, so check your specific set. Search the store by name before you subscribe; on older webOS versions an app may be listed but refuse to install.
If you're weighing up which service fits, our US live TV comparison goes through them by household. And if the service you want isn't available on your TV at all, our streaming device guide covers the cheapest ways to add it.
Playlist players on webOS
For an M3U playlist or Xtream Codes login from a legitimate source, such as a broadband operator's TV package or a tuner server at home, the LG Content Store carries a handful of player apps. Search "IPTV" or "M3U"; results differ by country.
Two practical points specific to LG:
The Magic Remote helps. LG's pointer remote makes typing a playlist URL on screen much less painful than a d-pad does. Some players still steer you to a website to enter details; if you'd rather keep your login off a third-party server, look for one that accepts entry on the TV.
Licences are often per TV. Many webOS players charge a small one-off fee per television after a trial. If you have several TVs, add up the cost; our guide to Smart IPTV on multiple devices covers how per-device licensing works.
A genuine player comes empty. If a webOS app arrives with premium channels already loaded, it isn't a player, and LG removes such apps when it finds them. Our player guide explains what to expect from a good one.
LG developer mode: not a shortcut
LG publishes a Developer Mode app that lets registered developers install their own test apps on a TV. The session expires and has to be renewed periodically, and it needs LG's developer tools on a computer.
It's meant for building webOS apps, not for everyday installs. Guides recommending it to ordinary viewers usually do so to load apps that couldn't pass LG's review. If a seller's instructions start with "enable developer mode", treat that as a reason to look elsewhere. Our pre-purchase checks list other warning signs.
Picture and connection tips
- Wire it. LG TVs have Ethernet ports. For live sport, wired beats Wi-Fi every time.
- Pick the right picture mode. Sports mode brightens and sharpens; Filmmaker Mode suits films. Motion settings (TruMotion) are a personal choice for sport.
- Keep automatic updates on. webOS updates fix app compatibility and, on eligible sets, bring Re:New upgrades.
- Clear space. Uninstall unused apps if the store warns about storage.
- Isolate the source. A channel that also stutters on a laptop is a source problem, not a TV one. Testing in VLC tells you which.
Common LG problems and fixes
LG TVs are dependable streamers, but a few problems come up often enough to be worth knowing.
"This app is not supported on this TV." The app needs a newer webOS than your set runs. Check for a system update first; if you're on the latest version, the app's minimum simply exceeds your model.
An app freezes or loops on the logo. Close it fully by holding the Home button and swiping it away, then reopen. If that fails, uninstall and reinstall. Turning the TV off at the wall for a minute also clears temporary faults that standby doesn't.
Wi-Fi keeps dropping. Some LG models have a Quick Start+ standby mode that keeps parts of the system half-awake; toggling it off and on, or changing your router's channel, can help. Ethernet avoids the question.
Local channels show another market. Services check location from your internet connection. Update your home area in the service's account settings and make sure no VPN is running on your router.
Sound out of sync with a soundbar. Under Sound > Additional Settings, adjust AV Sync; switching digital output to PCM rules out a format mismatch.
The guide lags with a large playlist. Ask your provider for a smaller, filtered playlist, or hide unused groups in the player.
If several family members watch on different screens, check your service's stream limit; our multiple-devices guide explains how they're counted.
