Short answer: if "IPTV" means apps like YouTube TV, Sling, Philo or Fubo, buy whichever you find easier; Roku's menus are simpler and both carry every major licensed service. If it means an M3U playlist or Xtream login you already have, buy a Fire TV Stick 4K Max, not a Roku. Roku has no sideloading and only a few basic playlist players in its store. The catch on the Amazon side: only the 4K Max and 4K Plus still run Android. The newer, cheaper Fire sticks don't, and they're as closed as a Roku.

Roku or Fire TV for IPTV in 2026
| Licensed live TV apps | Tie. Roku is easier to use |
| Your own M3U / Xtream login | Fire TV Stick 4K Max |
| Roku sideloading | Not available to consumers |
| Fire sticks to avoid | 4K Select, 2026 HD (Vega OS) |
| Prices | Both brands raised them in summer 2026 |
Two kinds of IPTV, two different answers
"IPTV" covers two very different setups, and the Roku vs Fire TV question only has a clear winner for one of them.
Licensed streaming services. YouTube TV, Sling TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo, DirecTV Stream, Philo, Frndly TV, and free services like Pluto TV and The Roku Channel. You sign in to an app. Both platforms carry all of them. No contest.
Playlist-based IPTV. Your provider gives you an M3U URL or an Xtream Codes login, and you need a separate player app to watch it. That's how many legitimate international packages, ISP TV services, hotel systems and home tuners (HDHomeRun, Plex Live TV) are delivered. Our M3U explainer and Xtream Codes explainer cover the formats. Here the platform matters a lot.
A player app is legal. Whether the playlist is legal depends on who's selling it. What's legal in the US explains the difference.
Every current model and its 2026 price
Both companies raised prices this summer, blaming memory costs. Roku's increases landed in late July 2026, Amazon's in late August.
| Device | US list (Sept 2026) | Before | Can install playlist players? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roku Streaming Stick (HD) | $39.99 | $29.99 | Roku store only |
| Roku Streaming Stick Plus | $59.99 | $39.99 | Roku store only |
| Roku Streaming Stick 4K | $79.99 | $49.99 | Roku store only |
| Roku Ultra | $149.99 | $99.99 | Roku store only |
| Fire TV Stick HD (2026) | $39.99 | $34.99 | Amazon store only (Vega OS) |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Select | $49.99 | - | Amazon store only (Vega OS) |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Plus | $69.99 | $49.99 | Yes, Fire OS |
| Fire TV Stick 4K Max | $84.99 | $59.99 | Yes, Fire OS |
Amazon and Roku both discount heavily around Prime Day, Black Friday and the holidays. List prices are a ceiling, not what most people pay.
What Roku can and can't do with a playlist
Roku OS is Roku's own system. It isn't Android, and it never has been. You install apps (Roku still calls some of them channels) from the Roku Channel Store, and that's it. There's a developer mode for building apps, but it's a development tool, not a way to install finished players. Roku also shut down the old "private channel codes" route several years ago, so the codes you'll see in old guides no longer work.
The Roku store does list a few M3U player apps. They'll load a playlist URL and play channels. What they generally lack, compared with Android players, is a full grid EPG, catch-up, multiple playlists, recording and good Xtream support. They're fine for a handful of channels. They're frustrating for a full package.
The other Roku workaround is casting: run a player on your phone and send it to the TV. It works, but it ties up your phone and drops if the phone sleeps. Our IPTV on Roku guide covers each route in detail.
What Fire TV can do, and which sticks
Fire TV has split in two.
Fire OS devices (4K Max, 4K Plus, Fire TV Cube and Fire TV-branded smart TVs) are Android underneath. They run TiviMate, IPTV Smarters-style players and Kodi. Some are in the Amazon Appstore; others install with Downloader. Amazon says these devices won't be moved to the new system.
Vega OS devices (the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD) run Amazon's newer Linux-based system. They only install from Amazon's own store, and the sideloading route open to developers is awkward enough that it isn't practical. For playlist IPTV they're in the same position as a Roku, or worse. Amazon has said every future Fire TV Stick will run Vega OS.
On all Fire TV devices, Amazon blocks apps it identifies as providing access to unlicensed content. That targets piracy apps, not neutral players. It's also why "loaded" Fire sticks from marketplace sellers stop working: the apps get blocked. See IPTV on Fire TV for setup.
Living with each one
| Roku | Fire TV (Fire OS) | |
|---|---|---|
| Home screen | Simple grid of apps, fewer ads | Content rows, heavy Prime and ad placement |
| Voice | Roku voice search | Alexa, including smart-home control |
| Remote | Headphone jack on Ultra remote; private listening in app | TV power and volume, Alexa button |
| Wired option | Ethernet on Ultra only | Adapter required |
| Free live TV | The Roku Channel, strong | Fire TV Channels, Freevee content in Prime Video |
| Best at | Easy for anyone in the house | Flexibility with third-party players |
Roku's simplicity is a real advantage in a house with older parents or kids. If nobody needs a playlist player, that alone is a reason to choose it.
What to buy
Licensed services only, and you want simple: Roku Streaming Stick 4K. At $79.99 list it's now pricey; wait for a sale. If your TV is far from the router, the Ultra's Ethernet port helps, but at $149.99 it's hard to justify.
A playlist you already have: Fire TV Stick 4K Max, ideally on sale. Check the box says 4K Max, not 4K Select.
A playlist, and you'd rather not depend on Amazon's future: skip both and look at a Google TV box. The onn 4K Pro runs the same Android players with Ethernet built in. Our onn 4K Pro vs Fire TV Stick 4K Max comparison and streaming device guide have more.
Avoid: any Roku or Fire stick sold with an IPTV subscription "included". A licensed service sells through its own app, not through a marketplace bundle.
Quick answers
Is Roku or Fire Stick better for IPTV? For licensed apps they're equal. For M3U or Xtream playlists, a Fire TV Stick 4K Max is better because Roku doesn't allow sideloading.
Can you sideload apps on Roku? Not as a consumer. Developer mode exists for building apps, and private channel codes were discontinued.
Can Roku play an M3U playlist? Yes, with a basic M3U player from the Roku store, but features like a full guide and recording are limited.
Which Fire TV Sticks support TiviMate? Fire OS models: the 4K Max and 4K Plus. Not the 4K Select or the 2026 HD stick, which run Vega OS.
Did Roku raise prices in 2026? Yes, in late July. The Streaming Stick 4K went from $49.99 to $79.99 and the Ultra from $99.99 to $149.99.
Is YouTube TV on both? Yes, along with Sling, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV and Philo.
Which is easier for non-technical users? Roku. Its menus are simpler and less cluttered with ads.
US list prices as of September 2026 following price rises by Roku (July) and Amazon (August). App availability in each store changes; check the store listing before you buy a device for a specific player. Checked September 2026.
