Short answer: for parents or grandparents watching Indian TV in the US, the best setup is the one with the fewest moving parts: one licensed app, one streaming device on the main TV, one remote. For most Hindi-speaking families that means Sling's Desi packs on a Roku or Fire TV; for Telugu, Tamil or Malayalam viewers, YuppTV is often the better fit. Pay monthly, so you can stop when the visit ends.

Who this guide is for
Every summer, and again around Diwali, a lot of Indian-American households have the same conversation. Mummy and Papa are here for three or six months. They don't want Netflix menus. They want the 8pm serial, the evening news from home, maybe a cricket match, and they want to be able to turn it on themselves while everyone else is at work.
Most "best IPTV for Indian channels" pages answer a different question. They list a few sellers with huge channel counts and no prices, and say nothing about who is actually holding the remote. This guide starts from the viewer: someone who may not read English menus comfortably, who will be alone with the TV for eight hours a day, and who will call you at the office if a login screen appears.
So the ranking below weighs four things above channel count: how few steps it takes to get from "TV off" to "show playing", whether the app has catch-up or DVR, whether there's real customer support in the US, and whether you can cancel when the visit ends.
The picks, ranked for ease
1. Sling TV Desi packs (Hindi-first homes). Sling sells its Indian packs as standalone subscriptions, so you don't need its English Orange or Blue plans. Sling has been marketing directly at visiting parents: its own campaign page lists Desi Binge Plus at $10 for the first month, then $15 a month, bundling on-demand shows from partner libraries such as SonyLIV and Star India On Demand, Willow cricket, and live news channels including Aaj Tak, India Today and Republic TV. The interface is the same live guide that American cable viewers know, which is easier for an older viewer than a grid of posters. Our full Sling Desi review goes pack by pack.
2. YuppTV (regional languages). If your parents watch in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam or Kannada, YuppTV usually carries more regional channels per dollar. It's licensed, runs on most TV platforms and has a catch-up archive that helps with the time difference. Its interface is busier than Sling's, so set up the favourites for them. Single-language plans have typically run about $10-15 a month; see our YuppTV review for the line-up caveats.
3. Sling Dakshin Flex (South Indian, Sling interface). Sling lists Dakshin Flex at $10 a month with channels such as Vijay TV, Star Maa, Asianet and Simply South, plus Willow. If you already use Sling for yourself, keeping your parents in the same app means one login to manage.
4. DISH satellite South Asian packages. The one option that doesn't depend on your Wi-Fi. A dish and a receiver with a normal remote is about as close to "Indian cable at home" as it gets. The catch is installation, equipment fees and commitment terms, which make it sensible only if your parents live with you year-round rather than visit.
5. A single network's own app. If Papa only ever watches one channel's shows, a single broadcaster app on demand can be cheaper and simpler than any live pack. The trade-off: no live news ticker, no "just switch it on" feeling. Our guide to the best Indian TV streaming services in the USA lists which network sells what.
Side by side
Prices are as published by each company or recent official listings, checked October 2026. Indian line-ups change when distribution deals renew, so check the current channel list before paying.
| Option | Typical price | Ease for an older viewer | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sling Desi Binge Plus | $10 first month, then $15/mo | High: cable-style guide | Hindi shows, news, cricket |
| Sling Dakshin Flex | $10/mo | High | Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam |
| YuppTV | About $10-15/mo per language | Medium: busier menus | Regional channels, catch-up |
| DISH South Asian | Varies; plus equipment | Highest: plain remote, no Wi-Fi | Parents living with you full-time |
| Single network app | Varies by app | Medium: on-demand only | One favourite network |
Our ranking favours Sling for Hindi viewers mainly on interface and billing, not on channel count. If a particular network is non-negotiable, check that network first and work backwards.
One device, one remote
The device matters more than the service. A good app on a confusing TV setup still produces phone calls.
Use a streaming stick, not the TV's own apps. Smart TV app stores vary by brand and age, and an older Samsung or LG may not get the app at all. A Roku or Fire TV gives you the same screens on every TV in the house, and you can talk your parents through it from memory.
Roku is the calmest choice. Its home screen is a plain grid of apps you choose, with fewer ads and suggestions pushed in between. Sling and YuppTV both have Roku apps. Fire TV also works well and its voice remote is handy, but the home screen pushes Amazon content, which some older viewers find confusing. Google TV sits in between.
Use HDMI-CEC so one remote does everything. Turn on the TV's CEC setting (Samsung calls it Anynet+, LG calls it SimpLink, Sony calls it Bravia Sync). Then pressing Home on the streaming remote turns the TV on and switches to the right input. Hide the TV's own remote in a drawer. Seriously.

Setting it up before they arrive
Do all of this the weekend before the flight lands, not on the first evening when everyone's jet-lagged.
- Sign in once and stay signed in. Use your own account and payment card, and log in on the living-room device so nobody sees a password screen later.
- Move the app to the first slot. On Roku, highlight the app, press the * button and choose Move. On Fire TV, long-press the app and pick Move to front.
- Set favourites. In Sling, add the channels they'll actually watch to Favourites so the guide opens to six channels rather than sixty.
- Schedule the recordings. Set the DVR to record the evening serials and news in advance (more on why below).
- Write a one-page card. In their language if possible: "Press Home. Press OK on the orange app. Press the arrow down for the guide." Tape it to the side table.
- Turn subtitles on or off. Some older viewers prefer them; check the app's caption setting once with them in the room.
- Test at the time they'll watch. If Wi-Fi in the guest room or family room is weak, the stream will buffer exactly when you're not home. Fix it with a wired connection or a mesh point.
The 9.5-hour problem
India is 9.5 hours ahead of New York during US daylight time and 10.5 hours ahead in winter, and the gap is bigger again on the West Coast. Indian primetime at 8pm IST is mid-morning on the East Coast and before dawn in California.
That changes what "best" means. A service that only streams live is less useful than one with a cloud DVR or catch-up. Grandparents tend to prefer watching the evening serial in the evening, so record it and teach them where the recordings live. Sling's DVR and YuppTV's catch-up archive both solve this; check the included DVR hours on whichever pack you buy, because extra hours are sometimes an add-on.
News is the exception. Many parents like having live Aaj Tak or India Today running in the background, and the live time doesn't matter so much there.
Paying for a visit, not a year
Visiting parents on a three- or six-month stay don't need an annual plan. Monthly billing with no contract is the right match: switch it on a week before arrival, cancel the week they leave, restart next year.
- Sling has no contract on monthly plans; you keep access until the end of the paid month.
- YuppTV offers cheaper 6- and 12-month plans, but monthly plans are usually non-refundable once started, and line-ups can change mid-term. Buy monthly first.
- DISH involves equipment and longer terms, so it only pays off for long-term residents.
Put a calendar reminder for the cancellation date. It's the single most common way families overpay.
Also check how many screens the plan allows. If you're streaming English channels in the bedroom while your parents watch Star Maa in the living room, both count, and limits vary by pack.
The box at the grocery store
Many Indian grocery stores and WhatsApp groups sell boxes or "Indian IPTV" subscriptions promising every Star, Sony, Zee and Colors channel plus IPL, for a one-off fee or $10-20 a month. They're tempting precisely because the setup looks simple: one box, everything included.
That combination isn't licensed in the US at that price. Those services go dark without warning, often mid-season, and there's no company to call. For a household where the main viewer can't troubleshoot, a box that randomly stops working is the worst outcome of all. Our checklist for spotting an IPTV scam lists the warning signs, from "lifetime" plans to crypto-only payment.
A licensed app costs a little more, but when it breaks, there's a support line and a refund process.
Quick answers
What's the easiest way for my parents to watch Indian TV in the US? A licensed app such as Sling's Desi packs or YuppTV on a Roku or Fire TV, set up in advance with the app in the first slot and the TV's HDMI-CEC switched on so one remote does everything.
How much does Sling Desi Binge Plus cost? Sling has listed it at $10 for the first month and $15 a month after that, as of its latest published offer. Check sling.com before buying.
Is Sling or YuppTV better for South Indian channels? YuppTV usually has more regional channels; Sling's Dakshin Flex at $10 a month is simpler if you already use Sling.
Can they watch the evening serial at a normal time in the US? Yes, if you use a cloud DVR or catch-up. Indian primetime falls in the US morning or overnight, so record it.
Do we need a contract? No. Sling and YuppTV both sell monthly plans; only satellite TV typically involves longer terms.
Which streaming device is simplest for older viewers? Roku has the plainest home screen. Fire TV and Google TV work well too but show more promoted content.
Are the Indian IPTV boxes sold in grocery stores legal? Boxes offering every major Indian network for a low flat fee aren't licensed in the US, and they tend to stop working without notice.
Prices and channel line-ups for Indian packs in the US change often, especially when broadcasters renew distribution deals or launch their own apps. This guide is based on published plan details, not hands-on testing. Checked October 2026.
