How to Set Up IPTV on the onn 4K Pro (2026): Apps, Settings and Recording

Short answer: setting up IPTV on the onn 4K Pro takes about fifteen minutes, and most of it happens in Google Play. Install your licensed live TV app or a playlist player from Play, plug in the Ethernet cable, turn on frame-rate matching, and you're done. The catch is hardware you can't see from the box: the 2026 model has a 100 Mbps Ethernet port and a USB 2.0 socket. The first is fine for any IPTV stream. The second matters only if you record to a USB drive.

Which onn 4K Pro do you have?

Walmart has sold two boxes under the same name, and a lot of setup guides mix them up with each other, or with the cheaper onn 4K stick. Check the box or Settings > System > About before following anyone's instructions about ports and storage.

For IPTV, both are good. The newer one has a faster chip, which you'll notice scrolling a long channel guide. The older one has the faster USB port. The 3GB of RAM on the 2026 box is less than before, but it's still more than most Fire TV sticks and plenty for a player with a few thousand channels loaded.

Our full onn 4K Pro review covers the hardware in more depth. This page is about getting it working.

Three ways to get live TV on it

"IPTV" on this box can mean three different things, and the setup is different for each. Most people need the first or second, and never touch a sideloaded app.

  1. A licensed live TV service. YouTube TV, Sling TV, Fubo, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV Stream and Philo all have Google TV apps in Play. Sign in, and the channel guide appears in the app. No playlist, no extra player.
  2. Free live channels. Google TV Freeplay is built in and shows up in the Live tab with no account. Pluto TV, Tubi and Plex add hundreds more free channels.
  3. Your own playlist. If a licensed provider gave you an M3U link or an Xtream Codes login, you need a player app to open it. That's what most "IPTV on onn" guides are about.

Route 3 only makes sense with a provider you can identify. If you're still choosing one, how to find a licensed IPTV provider is the place to start, and Xtream Codes explained covers what that login format actually is.

Setup, step by step

This assumes a new box out of the packaging. If yours is already set up, skip to step 4.

  1. Connect Ethernet before you power on. The port is on the back of the box. Google TV picks the wired connection automatically. You can confirm it in Settings > Network & Internet, where you should see "Ethernet: Connected".
  2. Run the Google TV setup. Sign in with your Google account on your phone when prompted. Choose your streaming services on the list it shows; that only affects recommendations, so don't overthink it.
  3. Let it update. Settings > System > About > System update. New boxes often have a firmware update waiting, and some player apps behave oddly until it's installed.
  4. Install your app from Play. Open Apps, search for your live TV service or player, and install. For a playlist, Kodi (with its PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on) and VLC are both free and in Play. Paid players move around: TiviMate dropped out of Play in late July 2026, and its developer didn't say why, so check its listing on your own box before paying.
  5. Add your login. In a playlist player, choose "Add playlist", then either paste the M3U URL or pick Xtream Codes and type the server, username and password. Typing on the remote is slow; most players let you paste from your phone through the Google TV app's keyboard.
  6. Load the guide. If your provider gave you a separate EPG (XMLTV) link, add it in the player's EPG settings. If the guide stays blank, our EPG fix guide works through the usual causes.
  7. Map the star button. The 2026 remote has a programmable star key. Set it to open your live TV app, and the box becomes one press from cold to TV.

Only install from outside Play if the developer of a legitimate player tells you to and Play doesn't have it. The switch is Settings > Apps > Security & restrictions > Unknown sources, and it's allowed per app (your browser or file manager), not for the whole box. Google is tightening this in 2027; the 2026 sideloading rules explain what changes and when.

Settings to change on day one

Out of the box, Google TV is set up for Netflix and YouTube, not for live channels that come in at 25, 29.97, 50 and 60 frames per second. Three changes fix most of the judder and audio problems people blame on their provider.

Setting Where Set to Why
Match content frame rate Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced display settings Seamless only, or Always if your TV blanks briefly anyway Stops the stutter on sport panning shots
Audio format Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced sound settings Automatic; Manual with only PCM if you lose sound on some channels Some live channels carry AC3 your soundbar mishandles
Player decoder Inside your player's playback settings Hardware (try software only if one channel won't play) The Amlogic chip decodes HEVC and H.264 in hardware
Player buffer Inside your player's playback settings Medium to large for live sport Covers short network dips at the cost of a few seconds' delay
Screen saver Settings > System > Ambient mode Longer delay, or off Some players don't stop the ambient screen during long matches

A word on that 100 Mbps Ethernet port, because it worries people. A 4K live stream needs about 25 Mbps; HD needs 5 to 8. Even two 4K streams at once fit comfortably. The wired port's job is to be steady, not fast, and it does that better than Wi-Fi in a busy apartment block. How much speed IPTV really needs has the numbers by resolution.

Recording on the USB port

The 32GB of internal storage is fine for apps. It isn't enough for recordings, so most people add a USB drive. On the 2026 box that port is USB 2.0, which has drawn plenty of complaints since launch.

In practice, USB 2.0 manages around 30 to 35 MB/s. An HD recording writes about 1 MB/s. So the port isn't the limit for one or two recordings at once; what you'll notice is slower copying of big files and slower scrolling through a large recordings folder. If you plan to record several channels at once all the time, the 2024 model's USB 3.0 port or a box like the Nvidia Shield is the better fit.

  • Use a USB flash drive or SSD formatted exFAT, and plug it in directly rather than through a hub.
  • When Google TV asks, choose to use it as removable storage, not as device storage, so recordings survive if you move the drive.
  • Point your player's recording folder at the drive in its settings.
  • Remember the USB-C socket is for power only. It doesn't take a hub or a drive.

Whether you can record at all depends on the service. Licensed services usually have their own cloud DVR; playlist players record locally. IPTV recording and DVR options compares the two.

When something goes wrong

Symptom Most likely cause Fix
Buffering at peak times only Wi-Fi congestion or provider load Switch to Ethernet; if it persists on Ethernet, it's the provider
Picture judders on fast motion Frame rate mismatch Turn on Match content frame rate
No sound on some channels Audio format the soundbar won't decode Set audio format to Manual, PCM only
Player crashes loading a big playlist Too many channels for 3GB RAM Hide unwanted groups, or load a smaller playlist
Guide is blank EPG URL missing or IDs don't match Add the EPG link; refresh it from the player
Player not in Play Delisted, or not offered for Google TV Use another Play-listed player
Everything slow after weeks of use Full storage or cache Settings > System > Storage; clear app caches

If buffering continues on Ethernet with a decent connection, the box isn't the problem. Our buffering guide walks through testing the connection and the provider separately, so you know which one to complain to.

One more honest point. If the box works but you're paying a seller who can't name their company, takes payment in crypto, or promises every channel for $10 a month, no setting will make that reliable. Those services go dark without warning, and the onn will get the blame.

Quick answers

Can you use IPTV on the onn 4K Pro? Yes. It runs Google TV with Google Play, so licensed live TV apps and playlist players install like any other app.

Do I need to sideload anything? Usually not. Licensed services, Kodi and VLC are all in Play. Only install from outside Play for a legitimate player that isn't listed there.

Is the 100 Mbps Ethernet port a problem? No. A 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps. The port is fast enough for several streams at once.

Is TiviMate on the onn 4K Pro? It runs on it, but it dropped out of Google Play again in late July 2026. Check Play on your own box for its current status.

Can I record IPTV on the onn 4K Pro? Yes, to a USB drive through a player that supports recording. The 2026 model's USB 2.0 port handles one or two HD recordings without trouble.

Why does live sport stutter on my onn? Usually frame rate. Turn on Match content frame rate in Advanced display settings, and use Ethernet.

How much does the onn 4K Pro cost? About $60 at Walmart; it was $59.98 in September 2026.
