Short answer: a lot of Indian families in the US pay for live IPTV when what they actually watch is three serials and the odd film. If nobody in the house needs live news or live cricket, the networks' own apps (ZEE5, SonyLIV, Aha, Sun NXT, ShemarooMe and the rest) usually cost less, carry more episodes, and solve the time-zone problem by design. Keep a live service only for the things that have to be live.

What "live" actually buys you
Search for Indian IPTV in the USA and almost every result assumes you want a live channel grid: Star Plus, Zee TV, Colors, Sony, Aaj Tak, Sun TV, all streaming in real time. That's what live IPTV services and live packs from Sling or YuppTV sell.
But think about how Indian television lands in America. Primetime in India, 8pm to 11pm IST, is roughly 10:30am to 1:30pm in New York during daylight time and the small hours in California. Very few people in the US watch the 9pm serial live. They watch it the next evening, from a DVR, from catch-up, or from an app.
And once you're watching a recording anyway, the live channel is mostly a delivery mechanism. The network's own app delivers the same episode, usually with the entire back catalogue, no channel-surfing ads for other networks, and often without a DVR limit.
So the real question isn't "which Indian IPTV is best". It's "what in our house genuinely needs to be live?"
A five-question test
Answer these honestly. If you say no to all five, you probably don't need live Indian TV at all.
- Does anyone watch Indian news as it happens? Elections, budget day, breaking stories.
- Does anyone follow cricket live? India tours, IPL, ICC events.
- Does someone like TV on in the background all day? Very common with visiting parents.
- Do you follow live reality TV finales or award shows the night they air?
- Does anyone watch more than two networks regularly? At that point, a bundle may be cheaper than separate apps.
One or two yeses doesn't automatically mean a full live pack, either. News has free official streams, and cricket can be bought on its own; both are covered below.
The apps, network by network
Each major Indian broadcaster or studio has its own streaming service. In the US you subscribe through the app or its website, and most run on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV and phones. Here's what each is really for.
ZEE5. Zee's own service: Zee TV serials and films across Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and more, plus ZEE5 originals. Zee has often released serial episodes on the app before or alongside TV broadcast in India, which is the opposite of what a live channel offers a US viewer.
SonyLIV. Sony Entertainment Television and Sony SAB shows, big formats such as Kaun Banega Crorepati and Shark Tank India, and well-reviewed originals. Sports rights on SonyLIV are licensed country by country, so don't assume the Indian sports line-up carries over to the US.
Star shows and JioHotstar. This is the confusing one. Star's serials (Star Plus, Star Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet) are owned by JioStar, and how they reach US viewers has shifted over the years. Sling has sold Star India On Demand inside its Desi packs. Before you plan around the JioHotstar app itself, check that it's offered in the US app store on your device and what it includes here.
Aha. Telugu-first, with a growing Tamil catalogue: new films a few weeks after theatrical release, originals, dubbed titles. For many Telugu households it replaces most of what they used to watch live.
Sun NXT. Sun TV Network's library across Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada: Sun TV, Gemini, Surya and Udaya serials, plus a deep film catalogue.
ShemarooMe. Bollywood classics, Gujarati plays and films, devotional content and comedy. Popular with older viewers who want the films they grew up with rather than this week's serial.
Hoichoi (Bengali) and ManoramaMAX (Malayalam) fill in specific languages.
Sling's Desi Binge packs are worth knowing about here, because they're effectively a bundle of several of these libraries in one app, with Willow cricket added on the Plus tier. Our Sling Desi review breaks down which libraries each pack includes.
Which app has your show
Start from the shows, not the platforms. Find the channel your favourite serial airs on in India, then follow the row.
| If it airs on | Look at | Main languages | Live channels? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Zee TV, Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu | ZEE5 | Hindi plus 10+ regional | Mostly on demand |
| Sony TV, Sony SAB | SonyLIV | Hindi, some regional | Varies by country |
| Star Plus, Star Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet | Sling Desi packs; check JioHotstar US availability | Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam | On demand via Sling |
| Telugu films and originals | Aha | Telugu, Tamil | No |
| Sun TV, Gemini, Surya, Udaya | Sun NXT | Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada | Limited |
| Classic Hindi films, Gujarati | ShemarooMe | Hindi, Gujarati, Marathi | No |
| Bengali films and series | Hoichoi | Bengali | No |
"Live channels?" refers to what each app has offered US subscribers; it changes as rights are renegotiated, so check the app's own channel section before relying on it.
If two or three rows apply to your household, compare those apps' combined cost against a live pack. Our guide to the best Indian TV streaming services in the USA goes deeper on picking by network.
When you still need live TV
News. Indian news is the clearest case for live, but it's also the easiest to get cheaply. Several big news networks run official live streams on their own YouTube channels and apps, and Sling's Desi Binge Plus has included Aaj Tak, India Today and Republic TV. A grandparent who wants news running in the background may need nothing more than a YouTube app pinned to the home screen.
Cricket. Live cricket in the US comes through rights holders, chiefly Willow, which you can buy on its own or inside some Sling Desi packs. No entertainment app covers it. Our Willow vs ESPN+ comparison covers which matches sit where.
Background TV. This is the one habit apps don't replicate well. Someone who likes flicking between channels will find an app's poster grid frustrating. For them, a licensed live pack such as Sling's Hindi or Dakshin packs, or YuppTV for regional channels, is worth paying for. See our YuppTV review for the regional picture.
Multi-network households. If the house watches four or five networks, a live pack with catch-up may simply be cheaper than four apps.
The cost maths
Exact US app prices move with promotions and differ by device store, so here's the method rather than a price list.
- List the shows each person in the house watches weekly.
- Map each to an app using the table above.
- Look up each app's US price inside the app or on its website, signed in from the US. Note the annual price, which is usually the better deal for an app you'll keep.
- Compare the total with the live pack you'd otherwise buy, plus any DVR add-on it needs.
In practice, a single-network household almost always comes out ahead with one app. Two apps are usually still cheaper than a big live pack. Past three, live bundles and Sling's Desi Binge start to look better, because you're buying several libraries in one bill.
| Household | Usually cheapest |
|---|---|
| Watches one network's serials | That network's app, annual plan |
| Two networks, no sport | Two apps |
| Several networks, plus cricket | Sling Desi Binge Plus or a live pack |
| Telugu films | Aha |
| Background live TV all day | A licensed live pack |
Two traps: rupee prices and Indian accounts
Rupee prices quoted online. Plenty of articles list ZEE5 or SonyLIV at "$1.49 a month". Those figures are Indian rupee prices converted to dollars. Indian plans are priced for India; US plans are priced separately and cost noticeably more. Budget with the price you see when signed in from the US.
Indian accounts in the US. A subscription bought in India is licensed for India. Many apps check where you are and restrict content outside the home country, and their terms usually forbid getting round that. The clean route is a US subscription from the US app store. It also means a US support desk and US-card billing when something goes wrong.
The same logic rules out the "every Indian channel and every app for $10" boxes sold through WhatsApp groups. Those aren't licensed in the US; our overview of Indian channels in the USA explains how licensed distribution works here.
Rotating apps through the year
On-demand apps are much easier to rotate than live packs, and that's where the real saving is. A few patterns that work:
- Binge and cancel. Subscribe monthly when a new season or film drops, watch it, cancel. Back catalogues don't disappear.
- Annual for the anchor app. Keep the one app the household uses every week on an annual plan; rotate the rest monthly.
- Live only for the season. Add a cricket subscription for IPL or an India tour, then drop it.
- Visiting parents. Add a live pack for the months they're here, if they want background TV, and cancel when they fly home.
Put cancellation dates in a calendar. Every one of these apps is happy to keep billing you.
Quick answers
Do I need IPTV to watch Indian channels in the USA? Not necessarily. If you mostly watch serials and films, the networks' own apps cover them on demand. Live services matter mainly for news, cricket and background viewing.
Which app has Zee TV shows in the US? ZEE5, Zee's own streaming service, which carries Zee's serials and films across Hindi and several regional languages.
Where do I watch Sony TV serials in the US? SonyLIV carries Sony Entertainment Television and Sony SAB shows; Sling's Desi Binge packs have also included the SonyLIV library.
Is there a Telugu-only option? Aha is Telugu-first and is the main app for new Telugu films and originals; Sun NXT covers Gemini TV's Telugu shows.
Why are US prices higher than the ones I see online? Many articles convert Indian rupee prices. US plans are priced separately; check the price inside the app while signed in from the US.
Can I use my Indian ZEE5 or SonyLIV account in the US? Indian plans are licensed for India and content can be restricted abroad. A US subscription is the reliable, licensed route.
How do I get Indian news live without a package? Several major news networks stream live on their official YouTube channels and apps, and some Sling Desi packs include news channels.
Can I watch cricket on these apps in the US? Generally no. US cricket rights sit mainly with Willow, which is sold separately or inside some Sling packs.
Indian streaming apps change US availability, prices and libraries often, and broadcasters move shows between their own apps and partners such as Sling. Prices aren't listed here because US app pricing changes with promotions; check in-app before subscribing. Checked October 2026.
