NBA League Pass on Firestick (2026-27): Two Ways In, and What Gets Blacked Out

Short answer: there are two ways to get NBA League Pass on a Fire TV Stick for the 2026-27 season, and they aren't interchangeable. Buy it inside the NBA app and you can prepay the season for $109.99 ($159.99 for Premium). Buy it as a Prime Video channel and you pay $16.99 a month, cancel any time, and watch inside Prime Video instead. The catch either way: League Pass blacks out every game on ESPN, ABC, NBC, Peacock and Prime Video live, and that's a far bigger slice of the schedule since the new TV deal began.

NBA app or Prime Video channel?

Until last season you could also get League Pass through YouTube TV and YouTube Primetime Channels. That ended on 30 September 2025, when Amazon became the exclusive streaming-platform distributor. So on a Fire TV in 2026, it's the NBA's own app or Prime Video. Nothing else.

NBA app Prime Video channel
All teams $16.99/mo or $109.99 season $16.99/mo
Premium (no ads, 3 streams) $24.99/mo or $159.99 season $24.99/mo
Single team Team Pass where offered $13.99/mo, one device
Need Amazon Prime? No Yes (Prime Video channels sit on top of Prime)
Where you watch NBA app Prime Video app
Works on Vega OS sticks Check the Appstore for your model Yes, Prime Video is built in

Prices as listed by the NBA and Prime Video in September 2026. They exclude tax and have risen most seasons, so confirm at checkout.

The money question is simple. A regular season runs from late October to mid-April, so roughly six months. Six months of the all-teams plan at $16.99 is about $102, close to the $109.99 season prepay. The season price includes the playoffs; the monthly route lets you stop after the trade deadline if your team is out of it. For a single team, the $13.99 Prime channel is the cheapest legitimate option. If you're not sure League Pass is even the right buy for you, the cheapest ways to watch the NBA this season compares it with every alternative.

One rule that saves confusion later: the two purchases don't talk to each other. League Pass bought through Prime only plays in Prime Video. Signing into the NBA app with the same email won't unlock it.

Check your Fire TV model first

Amazon's Fire TV range now runs two different operating systems, and it matters here.

Go to Settings > My Fire TV > About and look at the device name and software version.

  • Fire OS devices (Fire TV Stick 4K, 4K Max, older HD sticks, Fire TV Cube, Fire TV smart TVs): the NBA's help centre lists support for Fire OS 7 and later, and Fire TV Stick third generation or newer. A first- or second-gen stick from before 2020 is out.
  • Vega OS devices (Fire TV Stick 4K Select, the current Fire TV Stick HD): Amazon's new non-Android system. It runs Prime Video natively, but some third-party sports apps are either missing or run as cloud-streamed versions with extra lag. If "NBA" doesn't come up in the Appstore search, use the Prime Video channel. More on the Vega OS sticks.

If you're buying a stick mainly for basketball, the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is the safer choice for now, because it runs every major sports app locally. Which Fire TV to buy.

Setting up the NBA app

  1. From the Fire TV home screen, select Find (the magnifying glass), then Search, and type NBA.
  2. Choose the app published by NBA Media Ventures. Ignore look-alikes with "live stream" or "free" in the name.
  3. Select Get (or Download), then Open.
  4. Sign in. The app shows a short code; enter it on your phone or computer at the address shown on screen, signed into your NBA ID. Using a phone is much quicker than typing a password with the remote.
  5. If you haven't subscribed yet, pick a game or go to the account section and choose League Pass. Fire TV in-app purchase is offered in the US and about a dozen other countries, billed to your Amazon account. Buying on NBA.com instead and signing in works too.
  6. Pick your favourite teams during setup. The app uses them to surface games and flag blackouts.

Billing tip: if you buy through Amazon's in-app purchase, cancel under Settings > Applications > Appstore > Manage subscriptions on the Fire TV, or on Amazon's "Your Memberships and Subscriptions" page, not through the NBA website.

Setting up the Prime Video channel

  1. Open Prime Video on the Fire TV. Make sure the profile at the top is the account holder's, since kids' profiles can't add channels.
  2. Search NBA League Pass, or go to the Subscriptions section and find it in the sports row.
  3. Choose All teams ($16.99), Premium ($24.99) or a single team ($13.99), and confirm with your Amazon PIN if prompted.
  4. Games appear in the Live TV tab and on the League Pass channel page. Turn on notifications for your team if you want a nudge at tip-off.

Cancel on Amazon under Your Memberships and Subscriptions > Prime Video Channels. Access runs to the end of the month you paid for.

A nice side effect: Prime Video also carries Amazon's own NBA package, 66 exclusive regular-season games this season including Thursday and Friday doubleheaders and the NBA Cup knockout rounds. Those come with Prime itself, not League Pass, so they're in the same app either way.

What League Pass won't show you

This is where most League Pass disappointment comes from, and it got worse with the 2025 TV deal. League Pass is an out-of-market product. Two kinds of game are blocked live:

Game Live on League Pass? Where to watch it instead Replay on League Pass
National: ABC / ESPN No ABC by antenna; ESPN app or a live TV service From 6am ET next day
National: NBC / Peacock No NBC by antenna; Peacock Premium ($12.99/mo) for Monday exclusives From 6am ET next day
National: Prime Video No Prime Video (included with Prime) From 6am ET next day
Your local team on its regional channel No Regional sports network or team's own streaming app About three days later
Out-of-market games on local channels Yes n/a n/a

Blackout and replay timings are from the NBA's own pricing page. "Local" is decided by your location, not your favourite team, and the NBA app checks it. A Celtics fan in Phoenix gets almost every Celtics game that isn't on national TV. A Celtics fan in Boston gets almost none of them live.

The NBA app's blackout checker, on the League Pass purchase page, tells you which teams are local to your ZIP code. Run it before paying.

When it doesn't work

Symptom Likely cause Fix
"This game is blacked out in your area" National TV game, or your local team See the table above for where it airs
NBA app not found in search Vega OS device, unsupported region, or an old stick Use the Prime Video channel, or check your Fire OS version
Paid on Prime, NBA app says "subscribe" Separate purchases Watch in Prime Video instead
Wrong games blacked out after a move Location detected from your IP address Restart the router and the stick; contact NBA support if it persists
Picture drops to low quality at tip-off Wi-Fi congestion, not the service Move the router closer or use Amazon's Ethernet adapter; buffering fixes
Second TV says "too many streams" Standard plan allows one stream Upgrade to Premium (three streams)
App crashes or freezes Low storage on an older stick Settings > Applications > Manage Installed Applications > NBA > Clear cache

VPNs come up a lot in forum threads about blackouts. Using one to change your apparent location breaks the NBA's terms, and Prime Video routinely blocks VPN traffic. It's not a fix we'd recommend. When a VPN is actually useful.

Why it won't go in an IPTV player

If you already use TiviMate or IPTV Smarters on your Fire TV, you might hope to add League Pass to the same channel guide. You can't. League Pass, like Sunday Ticket, streams with DRM inside licensed apps and doesn't issue M3U playlists or Xtream logins. The same problem with Sunday Ticket, explained.

So anything sold as "NBA League Pass channels" for an IPTV player is an unlicensed restream. In practice those fail most often during exactly the games you bought them for. What a Fire TV can legitimately play in an IPTV player.
