Short answer: for Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada TV in the US, the one question that decides everything is Sun or Star? Sun Group channels (Sun TV, Gemini, Surya, Udaya) sit with Sling's Dakshin packs and the Sun NXT app. Star's South Indian channels (Star Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet) are in Sling's cheaper Dakshin Flex, which Sling listed at $10 a month in June 2025 with Willow cricket thrown in. ETV, Zee and the Malayalam independents mostly live on YuppTV. Work out which network your family watches, then buy.
At a glance
South Indian TV in the USA
| Vijay, Star Maa, Asianet | Sling Dakshin Flex (about $10/mo) |
| Sun TV, Gemini, Surya, Udaya | Sling Dakshin / Mega, or Sun NXT |
| ETV, Zee Telugu, Mazhavil | YuppTV |
| Telugu films and originals | aha (students $4.99/mo) |
| Cricket | Willow, inside Dakshin Flex |
Sun or Star: the split that decides it
Two companies own most of the South Indian entertainment channels your family is likely to ask for:
- Sun Group: Sun TV (Tamil), Gemini TV (Telugu), Surya TV (Malayalam), Udaya TV (Kannada), plus their movie, comedy and music spin-offs.
- Star, now part of JioStar: Star Vijay (Tamil), Star Maa (Telugu), Asianet (Malayalam), Star Suvarna (Kannada).
Around them sit Zee's southern channels (Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Keralam, Zee Kannada), Colors Tamil and Colors Kannada, and the independents: the ETV family in Telugu, Mazhavil Manorama and Flowers in Malayalam, Kalaignar in Tamil.
In the US, each of these groups has done its own distribution deals, so no single service carries all of them. Every guide currently ranking for this search either ignores that or sells you a box that pretends it doesn't matter. If you want the all-India picture across Hindi, Bengali and the rest, our Indian streaming guide by network covers it; this page goes deep on the four southern languages.
Tamil channels
| Channel | Network | Live in the US | On demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sun TV | Sun | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Sun NXT |
| Star Vijay | Star | Sling Dakshin Flex; YuppTV | Sling's Star India on-demand |
| Zee Tamil | Zee | Check current packs | ZEE5 |
| Colors Tamil | Colors | YuppTV | Limited |
| Kalaignar TV, news (Thanthi, Polimer, Puthiya Thalaimurai) | Independent | YuppTV | News also on official YouTube |
The Tamil decision: Sun TV serials or Vijay's reality shows and serials? If it's Vijay, Dakshin Flex is the bargain. If it's Sun, you're looking at the full Dakshin pack or Sun NXT. Households that want both usually end up with Sling Dakshin Mega, which Sling described as the base Dakshin pack plus more channels when it launched the Sun line-up.
Telugu channels
| Channel | Network | Live in the US | On demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Star Maa | Star | Sling Dakshin Flex; YuppTV | Sling's Star India on-demand |
| ETV, ETV Plus, ETV Cinema | ETV (Ramoji) | YuppTV | ETV Win |
| Gemini TV | Sun | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Sun NXT |
| Zee Telugu | Zee | YuppTV | ZEE5 |
| TV9 Telugu, NTV, TV5, V6, Sakshi and 20+ more news and devotional | Various | YuppTV | Most news also on official YouTube |
The Telugu decision: Telugu is YuppTV's home ground. Its app store listing runs to roughly forty Telugu channels, including Star Maa and its movie and music channels, the whole ETV family, Zee Telugu and an unmatched spread of news and devotional channels such as SVBC and Bhakthi TV. If the house watches ETV or wants Telugu news all day, YuppTV is the answer. If it's mainly Star Maa serials plus cricket, Dakshin Flex is far cheaper. Gemini is the one gap in both.
Malayalam channels
| Channel | Network | Live in the US | On demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Asianet | Star | Sling Dakshin Flex; YuppTV | Sling's Star India on-demand |
| Mazhavil Manorama | Malayala Manorama | YuppTV | Manorama Max |
| Flowers TV | Independent | YuppTV | Limited |
| Surya TV | Sun | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Sun NXT |
| Asianet News, Mathrubhumi News, Reporter | Various | YuppTV | Official YouTube |
The Malayalam decision: Asianet viewers get it cheapest on Dakshin Flex. Households that follow Mazhavil Manorama or Flowers serials need YuppTV, or Manorama Max for Manorama's shows on demand.
Kannada channels
| Channel | Network | Live in the US | On demand |
|---|---|---|---|
| Udaya TV | Sun | Sling Dakshin / Dakshin Mega | Sun NXT |
| Star Suvarna | Star | Added to Sling in 2023; check pack | Sling's Star India on-demand |
| Zee Kannada | Zee | YuppTV | ZEE5 |
| Colors Kannada | Colors | YuppTV | Limited |
| TV9 Kannada, TV5 Kannada, News9 | Various | YuppTV | Official YouTube |
The Kannada decision: the most fragmented of the four. Zee Kannada and Colors Kannada point to YuppTV; Udaya points to Sling Dakshin. Pick whichever covers the serial the household watches at 8pm and accept the gap.
Three setups that cover most homes
| Household | Setup | Approx. monthly |
|---|---|---|
| Star family (Vijay, Maa, Asianet) + cricket | Sling Dakshin Flex | $10 (June 2025 price) |
| Sun family (Sun TV, Gemini, Surya, Udaya) | Sling Dakshin, or Sun NXT for on-demand | $20 for Dakshin (late-2023 price) |
| Telugu ETV/Zee viewers, or regional news all day | YuppTV Telugu or regional pack | Roughly $10 to $45 by pack |
Want Sun and Star both? Sling Dakshin Mega was listed at $25 a month (or $200 a year as an annual pack) when Sling launched its expanded Sun line-up. Check whether today's Mega pack also includes the Star channels before assuming it does; pack contents have shifted since.
Our Sling Desi review covers how the Dakshin packs work, and the YuppTV review covers its plans and device activation fees.
On-demand apps, and when they're enough
If nobody in the house watches anything at broadcast time, skip live TV entirely and pick the app for your language:
- aha for Telugu (and some Tamil) films and originals. In October 2024 it launched a US student plan at $4.99 a month or $24.99 a year with a college email.
- Sun NXT for Sun Group serials and films across all four languages.
- ETV Win for ETV's Telugu shows.
- Manorama Max for Mazhavil Manorama serials.
- ZEE5 for Zee Tamil, Zee Telugu, Zee Keralam and Zee Kannada shows.
Festival weekends are when this matters. Pongal, Sankranti, Onam and Ugadi film premieres air on Sun, Star and Zee channels, each with its own exclusive. If your family plans its week around a festival premiere, make sure the network showing it is the one you've subscribed to.
Timing helps too. India is 9 hours 30 minutes ahead of US Eastern during daylight saving time and 10 hours 30 minutes ahead in winter, so a 7pm serial in Chennai airs at 9:30am Eastern in summer. Catch-up or DVR is what makes live packs workable for working families.
Putting it on the living-room TV
None of this needs a special Indian IPTV box. Sling, YuppTV, Sun NXT, aha and ZEE5 all publish apps for the mainstream platforms, so the device question is really about who's using the remote.
- For parents or grandparents: a Roku or a Fire TV Stick with only the one or two apps they need on the home row. Remove everything else. Fewer tiles means fewer phone calls.
- For a two-service home (say Dakshin Flex plus YuppTV): put both apps first on the home screen in the same order on every TV in the house, so muscle memory works in every room.
- For Telugu or Tamil news running all day: YuppTV's channel grid is closer to Indian cable than an on-demand app. Leave it on the last-watched channel and the TV will usually reopen there.
- On Wi-Fi trouble: serial episodes stutter more often from a weak signal behind the TV than from the service. A wired connection or a stick closer to the router fixes most of it.
Check each app's store listing for your exact device before you subscribe; smaller apps such as Manorama Max or ETV Win are not always on every platform.
Why "every South Indian channel" offers fail
A box or subscription that claims Sun TV, Vijay, Star Maa, Gemini, ETV, Asianet and Surya all together, for one low price, is telling you it hasn't licensed any of them. Sun and Star are rivals who sell their US rights separately, and no legitimate US service carries both families at a budget price.
These services tend to fail exactly when you need them, around big film premieres and cricket matches, because that's when rights holders push hardest to take pirate streams down. How to spot an IPTV scam lists the warning signs. For cricket through a legitimate route, Willow vs ESPN+ compares the options.
