Short answer: it depends which Fire TV Stick HD you have, because Amazon has sold two completely different devices under that name. The 2024 model runs Android-based Fire OS and can install IPTV player apps from the Appstore or, with a setting changed, from outside it. The 2026 model, on sale since April 29, 2026, runs Vega OS and installs Amazon Appstore apps only. Both run licensed live TV apps like Sling and Hulu. Only the older one runs Android players like TiviMate.

The two HD sticks side by side
Most "IPTV on Firestick" guides don't mention this at all, which is why people follow them, open Settings, and find the options they're told to switch on simply aren't there. Here's what separates the two.
| Fire TV Stick HD (2024) | Fire TV Stick HD (2026) | |
|---|---|---|
| Released | October 2024, $34.99 | April 29, 2026, $34.99 |
| Operating system | Fire OS (Android-based) | Vega OS (Linux-based) |
| Apps from outside the Appstore | Yes, after enabling a permission | No |
| Chip | 1.7GHz quad-core | 1.7GHz quad-core (MediaTek MT8698D) |
| RAM / storage | 1GB / 8GB | About 1GB / 8GB |
| Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi 5 | Wi-Fi 6 |
| Resolution | 1080p, HDR10/HDR10+/HLG | 1080p, HDR10/HDR10+/HLG |
| Power | Wall adapter | Can run from the TV's USB port |
On paper the 2026 stick is the better device. It's slimmer, Amazon claims it's more than 30% faster in everyday use, and it has the newer Wi-Fi. For IPTV specifically, that doesn't matter much, because the thing most IPTV users need, a choice of player apps, is what it gave up.
How to tell which one you have
Thirty seconds, three checks. Any one of them settles it.
- Software version. Go to Settings → My Fire TV → About and look at the software version. If it starts with 1., it's Vega OS, so it's the 2026 stick. Fire OS versions start with a higher number, typically 7 or 8.
- The stick itself. AFTVnews, which tracks Amazon hardware closely, points to the physical tells: the 2026 HD has rounded corners and "Fire TV" printed on it. The 2024 HD has squarer corners and no lettering.
- Your order history. Anything bought before late April 2026 is the 2024 model. After that, it depends on which stock the seller shipped, so check the device rather than assuming.
That last point catches people buying from third-party sellers or clearance shelves. The listing title rarely says which generation is in the box. If you're about to buy one specifically to run a player app, ask, or buy somewhere with an easy return.
If you're not even sure it's an HD stick, older Fire TV Stick Lite and third-generation Fire TV Stick models are 1080p too. Both run Fire OS, so they behave like the 2024 HD below, just more slowly.
On the 2024 model: what you can install
The 2024 HD behaves like the Fire TV Sticks most guides describe.
From the Appstore. Licensed live TV services (Sling, Fubo, DirecTV, Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Philo), free channel apps (Pluto TV, Tubi) and a selection of general playlist players. Start here. Appstore apps update themselves and Amazon won't block them.
From outside the Appstore. If a legitimate provider supplies its own app as a download, or you use a player that isn't in Amazon's store, you can allow it:
- Open Settings → My Fire TV → About and click the device name seven times until it says you're a developer.
- Go back to My Fire TV → Developer Options → Install unknown apps.
- Switch on only the app you'll install from, usually Downloader or a file manager from the Appstore.
- Download the player from its developer's own website, install, then switch the permission off again.
Two cautions. Sideloaded apps don't update automatically, so you'll need to check for new versions yourself. And Amazon blocks apps it identifies as giving access to unlicensed content, both at install and at launch, on every Fire TV, the 2024 HD included. A player that plays your own playlist isn't the target. An app that arrives with thousands of channels already inside it is. What makes an IPTV source licensed.
On the 2026 model: what you can install
The Amazon Appstore, and nothing else. Vega OS can't run Android apps, so Downloader, APK files and the Developer Options route don't exist on it. That's not a setting Amazon hid. The system was built that way.
What's available at launch, according to Cord Cutters News and PCWorld: Netflix, YouTube, Disney+, Prime Video, Hulu and Sling, with the wider Vega catalogue that launched on the 4K Select also including Fubo, DirecTV, ESPN, Peacock, Paramount+, Pluto TV, Tubi and Plex. YouTube TV was reported missing when Vega first launched in October 2025, so check the store for it by name before you subscribe.
For playlist players, the picture is thin. A few basic players have appeared in the Vega Appstore, but none of the established Android ones like TiviMate, OTT Navigator or Kodi. If your provider gives you an M3U file or Xtream login and expects you to choose a player, search the store on the stick for "M3U" and check the publisher, the last update date and whether it supports an XMLTV guide. Our guide to TiviMate alternatives on Vega goes into what to look for.
The upside is real, though. With no sideloading, there's nothing to break, nothing to update by hand, and nothing for a "loaded stick" seller to put on it. For a parent's TV or a bedroom that only needs Netflix and a live TV service, that's a point in its favour.
The limits both share
Whichever HD you have, three constraints apply to live TV.
1080p maximum. On a 1080p TV that's fine, and most live channels are 720p or 1080i anyway. On a 4K TV, sports and 4K events from services that offer them won't reach their full quality, and the TV's upscaling does the rest.
1GB of RAM. A live TV guide for a few hundred channels, plus the video buffer, is a lot for 1GB. Expect slower guide scrolling and apps reloading when you switch between them. Uninstall what you don't use under Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications and restart now and then by holding Select and Play for five seconds.
8GB of storage, about half of it usable. Large player apps that cache seven days of guide data fill it surprisingly fast. On the 2024 model, that's the most common reason sideloaded installs fail with "There is not enough space".
| What you see | Which stick | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| No "Developer Options" or "Install unknown apps" | 2026 | Vega OS. Not hidden, not there |
| Downloader isn't in the Appstore | 2026 | It has no Vega version |
| Full-screen message that an app is blocked | Either | Amazon has flagged the app; reinstalling won't help |
| "App not installed" after downloading | 2024 | Usually storage, or the permission is off |
| Guide lags, channels slow to change | Either | RAM pressure; close apps and restart |
Should you buy one for IPTV?
Honestly, probably not, and the reason is price rather than performance.
Amazon raised list prices on August 24, 2026, and the HD now lists at $39.99, though it's regularly discounted to around $20. On September 30, 2026, Amazon launched a third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K at $59.99, with an introductory price of $29.99. That's also Vega OS, but it adds 4K for very little money. For most TVs bought in the last five years, it's the better Vega stick.
If you need a player app that isn't in the Amazon Appstore, neither HD stick is the answer. The 2024 HD can technically do it, but you can't reliably buy one new any more, and its 1GB of RAM and Wi-Fi 5 make large playlists a chore. The Fire TV Stick 4K Max, now the only Android-based stick Amazon still sells, has 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage and Wi-Fi 6E. Our Fire TV buying guide compares every model, and our cheap stick roundup covers non-Amazon options around $40.
Where the HD does make sense: a 1080p TV in a kitchen or spare room, running a licensed live TV service or free channels. At $20 on sale, that's a fair price for that job.
Quick answers
Does the Fire TV Stick HD support IPTV apps? Both versions run licensed live TV apps from the Amazon Appstore. The 2024 model can also install Android player apps from outside the store. The 2026 model can't.
Can I install TiviMate on the Fire TV Stick HD? On the 2024 model, yes. On the 2026 model, no, because it runs Vega OS, which doesn't run Android apps.
How do I know if my Fire TV Stick HD runs Vega OS? Settings, My Fire TV, About. A software version starting with 1 means Vega OS.
Can I sideload on the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD? No. It only installs apps from the Amazon Appstore, and there's no setting to change that.
Is the Fire TV Stick HD good enough for live TV? On a 1080p TV, with a licensed service's own app, yes. Its 1GB of RAM struggles with large playlist guides.
Will the 2024 Fire TV Stick HD be updated to Vega OS? No. Amazon has said existing Fire OS devices won't be moved to Vega OS.
Which Fire TV Stick should I buy for IPTV instead? The Fire TV Stick 4K Max if you need player apps from outside the Appstore. The new Fire TV Stick 4K if everything you watch has an Appstore app.
