IPTV on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select: What Works and How to Set It Up

Short answer: the Fire TV Stick 4K Select can show live TV, but only through apps in the Amazon Appstore. That covers the big licensed live TV services, the free ad-supported channels and Plex, which is plenty for a lot of homes. What it can't do is run the Android playlist players most IPTV guides assume, because it runs Amazon's Vega OS rather than Android. One more thing the box won't tell you: Amazon discontinued the 4K Select on September 30, 2026, and its replacement runs Vega too.

At a glance

Live TV on a 4K Select

Licensed live TV apps Yes: Sling, Fubo, DirecTV, Hulu and more
Free live channels Yes: Pluto TV, Tubi, Fire TV's Live tab
Antenna channels Through Plex with a network tuner
M3U or Xtream playlists Only if an Appstore player supports it
Sideloading APKs Not possible, on any setting

What works and what doesn't

Most pages ranking for this question are Firestick sideloading tutorials written for older Android sticks. Follow them on a 4K Select and you'll get stuck at step one, because the menus they describe aren't there. So start from what the device actually does.

You want to watch Works on 4K Select? How
A paid live TV service (Sling, Fubo, DirecTV, Hulu + Live TV) Yes The service's own Appstore app
Free ad-supported channels Yes Pluto TV, Tubi, the Live tab
Local channels from an antenna Yes, with extra hardware Network tuner plus Plex
Sports apps (ESPN, Peacock, Paramount+) Yes Their own apps
An M3U or Xtream login from a licensed provider Sometimes Only via a player that's in the Vega Appstore
TiviMate, Kodi, OTT Navigator No Android apps can't run on Vega OS
Anything from Downloader or an APK link No There's no install-from-file path at all

The pattern is simple. If the company that holds the rights has built a Vega app, you're fine. If your setup relies on a third-party Android player, you're not, and no setting will change that.

Confirm you have a 4K Select

Amazon now sells three Fire TV Sticks that look almost identical and behave very differently, so check before you follow any instructions.

  1. Press Home, then open Settings → My Fire TV → About.
  2. Look at the device name and the software version. A version number starting with 1. means Vega OS. Fire OS versions start with 5, 6, 7 or 8.
  3. If the name says Fire TV Stick 4K Select, this guide is for you. If it says 4K Max or 4K Plus, you have an Android-based stick and our model-by-model Fire TV guide applies instead.

The new third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K, launched September 30, 2026, and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD also run Vega, so nearly everything below applies to them as well.

Setting up licensed live TV, step by step

This is the route that works best on the Select, and it's the one Amazon designed it for.

  1. Search on the stick, not on your phone. Use the magnifying glass on the home screen or hold the Alexa button and say the service's name. The on-device store only shows apps compatible with Vega, so if it appears, it'll install.
  2. Check the listing before signing up. At launch in October 2025, reviewers confirmed apps from Sling, Fubo, DirecTV, Hulu, ESPN, Peacock, Paramount+, Pluto TV, Tubi and Plex. Apple TV and YouTube TV were reported missing at launch. Developers have been adding Vega versions since, so search for your service by name rather than trusting an old list, including this one.
  3. Install and sign in with the activation code. Most live TV apps show a short code on screen. Enter it at the address shown on a phone or laptop where you're already logged in. It's faster than typing a password with the remote.
  4. Allow the app into the Live tab. Fire TV asks whether a service can add its channels to the Live tab and the guide. Say yes. You then get one combined guide across services instead of opening each app.
  5. Turn on location if asked. Live TV services use it to deliver your local network affiliates. Refuse it and you'll lose locals, not the service.

Prices from our September 2026 check: Sling Orange or Blue $45.99 a month, YouTube TV's Full plan $82.99, Hulu + Live TV $89.99 and Fubo Pro $88.99. If you're only after the cheapest way to get a handful of channels, our cheapest live TV breakdown compares them by what you actually need.

Free live channels and your antenna

The Select is better at free TV than people expect. Before paying for anything, try these.

The Live tab. On the home screen, the Live section aggregates free channels from Amazon's own catalogue and partner services like Pluto TV and Tubi, laid out as a channel guide. News, classic sitcoms, crime reruns and some sports highlights are there with ads and no sign-in.

Pluto TV and Tubi. Install them separately as well. Each has hundreds of linear channels, and their own apps have better guides than the Live tab's merged view.

Your antenna, through Plex. The Select has no tuner and no USB port for one, but a network tuner such as an HDHomeRun sits next to your antenna and puts the channels on your home network. Plex, which is in the Vega Appstore, can then show and record them. You'll need a Plex server on a computer or NAS and a Plex Pass for live TV and DVR. It's more setup than most people want, but it's the only way to get antenna channels onto this stick. Our antenna guide covers whether an antenna will even reach the stations near you.

If you have a playlist from your provider

Some legitimate services, such as broadband TV packages, hotel systems and a few international broadcasters, deliver channels as an M3U playlist or an Xtream Codes login and expect you to bring your own player. This is where the 4K Select falls short.

Android players can't be installed. That rules out the mature ones with full programme guides, catch-up and recording. A handful of basic playlist players have appeared in the Vega Appstore since 2025, and some sites claim specific Smarters-style apps work. Treat those claims carefully. If you search the store for "M3U" or "IPTV player", check four things on any listing:

  • Publisher. A real developer name with a website, not a generic brand.
  • Last updated date. Anything untouched for a year will struggle as Vega updates.
  • EPG support. You want XMLTV guide support, or you're scrolling a bare channel list.
  • Free tier or trial. Load your playlist on a weekday evening before paying.

If nothing in the store does what your provider's setup needs, you have a hardware problem, not a settings problem. Our TiviMate alternatives for Vega OS goes through the options in more detail.

A warning that matters more than any of the above. Amazon blocks apps it identifies as giving access to unlicensed content, at install and at launch, on every Fire TV. Anyone selling "channels that work on the new Fire Stick" with their own app is offering exactly what that block is aimed at. If the seller can't point to an Appstore listing and a company name, walk away. How to spot an IPTV scam lists the other signals.

Getting smooth playback on 1GB of RAM

The Select has 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and Wi-Fi 5. That's thin for live TV apps, which hold a guide grid and a video buffer in memory at the same time. A few habits make a real difference.

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Guide scrolls slowly Too many apps resident in memory Hold Select + Play for five seconds to restart
Apps reload when you switch back RAM is full Uninstall apps you don't use: Settings → Applications → Manage Installed Applications
Stream drops to low quality in the evening Weak Wi-Fi behind the TV Use the HDMI extender; join your router's 5GHz network
Constant buffering on one TV only Signal, not the service Add Amazon's Ethernet adapter (about $20) if a cable can reach
"Storage almost full" warning App caches growing Clear cache (not data) in each app's settings page

Run the speed test under Settings → Network, highlight your network and press Play/Pause. It measures speed at the TV, which is the number that matters. A single HD stream wants 8 to 10 Mbps sustained; 4K wants about 25. Our buffering guide works through the rest.

One limitation you can't fix: the Select has no Dolby Vision and passes Dolby audio through rather than decoding it. For live TV that rarely matters, since most live channels are 1080p or 720p HDR-free anyway.

It's been discontinued: what that means

On September 30, 2026, Amazon announced a third-generation Fire TV Stick 4K at $59.99 (with a launch promo to $29.99) and said the 4K Select and 4K Plus are being discontinued. The new 4K runs Vega OS too, with 1GB of RAM, 8GB of storage and Wi-Fi 6.

For owners, practically nothing changes. Discontinued doesn't mean unsupported, and the Select runs the same Vega OS as the new model, so apps built for one run on the other. If anything, Amazon now has three Vega sticks on the market, which gives developers more reason to build Vega apps.

It does mean the "buy a 4K Select and use it like an old Firestick" plan is finished for good. Every new stick Amazon sells is Vega. The 4K Max is now the only Android-based stick left in the range.

Keep it or swap it?

This comes down to one question: does everything you watch come from a service with its own Appstore app?

Keep it if you watch a live TV service plus Netflix, Prime Video and the free channels. At the $20 to $30 it's often sold for, it's a fine bedroom-TV stick and it's genuinely simpler than an Android one. Nothing to sideload means nothing to break.

Swap it if you rely on a playlist player, need antenna channels without building a Plex server, or want a proper DVR on the device. Amazon's standard return window is 30 days for most purchases. The usual swap is a Fire TV Stick 4K Max ($84.99 list, often discounted) if you like Fire TV's menus, or a Google TV box such as the onn 4K Pro if you don't care. Quick answers

Can I watch IPTV on the Fire TV Stick 4K Select? Yes, through apps in the Amazon Appstore: licensed live TV services, free channel apps and Plex. You can't install Android IPTV players on it.

Can I use Downloader on the 4K Select? No. Vega OS has no install-from-file option, so Downloader and APK files don't work.

Does YouTube TV work on the 4K Select? It was missing at launch in October 2025. Search the Appstore on the stick for the current status before you rely on it.

Can I use a VPN on the 4K Select? Yes, since late 2025 several major VPN providers have released Vega apps. Note that a VPN won't make a service available outside the region it's licensed for, and many services block VPN connections.

Can I watch local channels from an antenna? Only through a network tuner and a Plex server, since the stick has no tuner input.

Is the Fire TV Stick 4K Select discontinued? Yes. Amazon announced its discontinuation on September 30, 2026, alongside a new Vega-based Fire TV Stick 4K.

Will the 4K Select ever support sideloading? Amazon has given no sign it will. Vega was designed around Appstore-only installs.
